The 3rd Annual Legacy Track Meet Is Set For Saturday

The 3rd annual Morgan State University Legacy Track & Field meet is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2006. The meet will be held at Hughes Stadium on the Morgan State campus.

LEGACY HONOREES (1970-79)

NEVILLE HODGE - Born in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in December of 1955. Neville graduated from Charlotte Amalie High School. He attended Morgan State University from 1976 to 1980. While at Morgan, Neville participated in the Caribbean Club, the Health and Physical Education Club and the Varsity Track & Field Team. He was elected captain of the track team, won All-American honors, was cited in Who’s Who in America and was on the academic honor roll in the spring of 1979. He is the school record holder in the 100m (10.10s) and 200m (20.46s) and is the 1979 NCAA indoor 400m champion. Neville is a 3-time Olympian representing the Virgin Islands in 1984, 1988 and 1992. He was 3-time Penn Relay 100 Master champion in 1997, 1999 and 2000. He was Olympic coach and flag carrier for the Virgin Islands. Currently, Neville is the track & field coach at Morgan. PAULA CLAGON-SMITH - Was a standout track athlete at Morgan State University from 1975-1979 and was one of the first members and scholarship recipients of MSU’s women’s track team. In 1976, she had a number of accomplishments. She helped set the AIAW record in the 4x400m relay at the University of Maryland Invitational Track Meet. Paula helped set an American record in the 4x400m relay (3:45:1) at the Princeton Indoor Relays and posted a time of 55:00 in the 400m dash at the University of Maryland Invitational. In 1977, she was a member of the AIAW 4x400m Relay Championship and posted a 3:44:2 at the University of Maryland Invitational in 1978. In 1979, her 4x400 relay team was nationally ranked in the Top 10. Her team tied a World Record and broke an American Record at the Princeton Relays with a time of 3:43:2, placed 1st at the Penn Relays (3:42:6), and won the AIWA Championship by setting an AIWA record with a time of 3:37:3. Paula is currently a 2006 Morgan State Athletic Hall of Fame nominee and she currently resides in Hawthorne, California.

 

PAULETTE CLAGON - She is the twin sister of Paula (Clagon) and was an integral part of Morgan State’s track resurgence in the late 70’s, especially as a member of the 4x400m relay team. She helped set the AIAW record in the 4x400m relay at the University of Maryland Invitational Track Meet. Paulette helped set an American record in the 4x400m relay (3:45:1) at the Princeton Indoor Relays and posted a time of 55:00 in the 400m dash at the University of Maryland Invitational. In 1977, she was a member of the AIAW 4x400m Relay Championship and posted a 3:44:2 at the University of Maryland Invitational in 1978. In 1979, her 4x400 relay team was nationally ranked in the Top 10. Her team tied a World Record and broke an American Record at the Princeton Relays with a time of 3:43:2, placed 1st at the Penn Relays (3:42:6), and won the AIWA Championship by setting an AIWA record with a time of 3:37:3. Paulette was also nationally ranked Top 10 in the 600m dash. She is currently a 2006 Morgan State Athletic Hall of Fame nominee. Paulette was honored as 2004 Teacher of the Year (schoolwide) and has worked as vice principal, athletic director and religious coordinator at St. Emydius Catholic School. She currently resides in Inglewood, California.

 

YVETTE COLEMAN - Attended Morgan State on a four-year athletic scholarship where she was a member of the 4x400m relay team. She helped set the AIAW record in the 4x400m relay at the University of Maryland Invitational Track Meet. Yvette helped set an American record in the 4x400m relay (3:45:1) at the Princeton Indoor Relays and posted a time of 55:00 in the 400m dash at the University of Maryland Invitational. In 1977, she was a member of the AIAW 4x400m Relay Championship and posted a 3:44:2 at the University of Maryland Invitational in 1978. In 1979, her 4x400 relay team was nationally ranked in the Top 10. Her team tied a World Record and broke an American Record at the Princeton Relays with a time of 3:43:2, placed 1st at the Penn Relays (3:42:6), and won the AIWA Championship by setting an AIWA record with a time of 3:37:3. Yvette participated as a member of the National Association of Physical Education and Recreation and was a member of the Harford Heights School #37 Leadership Team before completing her undergraduate degree in 1980. She is currently a 2006 Morgan State Athletic Hall of Fame nominee and resides in Baltimore, Maryland.

 

TANYA ELLIOTT - Was an outstanding student-athlete at Morgan State University from 1976-1980. In 1977, she helped lead her team to a 4x100m relay Championship at the Penn Relays with a time of 47.5. In 1979, her 4x100m relay team posted a time of 45.9 as they posted their second 1st place finish at the world renowned Penn Relays. She excelled in the classroom where she stayed on the Dean’s List and completed her undergraduate degree Cum Laude with a 3.3 GPA. Tanya earned a Master’s degree from Strayer University in 1995 and a Master’s Certificate in Government Contracting from George Washington University in 1998. Tanya is currently a 2006 Morgan State Athletic Hall of Fame nominee and she currently resides in Ellicott City, Maryland.
