MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY FOOTBALL HONORS

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 14, 2019 – Florida A&M quarterback Ryan Stanley and Norfolk State quarterback Juwan Carter have been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Offensive Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Bethune-Cookman’s Marquis Hendrix is the Defensive Player of the Week and Florida A&M freshman Kamari Young has been selected as Rookie of the Week. Earning Offensive Lineman of the Week honors is Norfolk State’s Justin Redd and picking up Specialist of the Week honors is Bethune-Cookman’s Jimmie Robinson.  
 
Stanley (QB, 6-3, 210, r-Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) broke the school’s mark for career passing yards in the Rattlers’ 42-38 win over South Carolina State in the first quarter. He threw for a career-high 427 yards in that game, completing 30 of 49 passes with three touchdowns.
 
Carter (QB, 6-0, 175, Jr., Richmond, Va.) accounted for a career-high and MEAC season-high six touchdowns in Norfolk State’s 49-21 win over Howard. He completed 15 of 23 passes for 377 yards and four touchdowns and carried the ball eight times for 56 yards and two touchdowns for 433 yards of total offense – the most by a MEAC player this season. 
 
Hendrix (LB, 6-1, 230, Sr., Ocala, Fla.) led the Wildcats in tackles with his second straight double-digit tackle game in a 27-13 win over North Carolina Central. He finished with 12 total tackles and two sacks for a loss of seven yards.
 
Young (TE, 6-3, 230, Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) caught two passes in Saturday’s win over South Carolina State, including the 19-yard game-winning pass from Stanley with just over a minute remaining to snap the Rattlers’ 14-game losing streak to the Bulldogs.
 
Redd (OL, 6-5, 320, r-So., Hampton, Va.) graded out at 89 percent and spearheaded a Spartans offense that amassed 649 yards of total offense, including 377 passing yards and 272 yards rushing. He didn’t yield any sacks and recorded four pancake blocks with no penalties in the win over Howard.
 
Robinson (ATH, 5-8, 175, Sr., Palm Coast, Fla.) had two kickoff returns for 114 total yards, including a 79-yard return for a touchdown. He finished the game with 174 all-purpose yards, including 54 yards receiving and a touchdown in the win over North Carolina Central.
 
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Akevious Williams (B-CU) completed seven of his 14 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 14 times for 58 yards and a touchdown, while also catching a 3-yard touchdown pass.
 
Tarquie Akbar (FAMU) registered three pancake blocks and didn’t allow a sack as Florida A&M racked up 505 yards of total offense.
 
Markquesse Bell (FAMU) registered nine solo stops in the win over South Carolina State.
 
Josh Chase (MSU) finished the game against Delaware State with 19 carries for 116 yards.
 
Chris Myers (NSU) notched 1.5 of Norfolk State’s season-high five sacks and had a quarterback hurry against Howard.
 
Nicholas O’Shea (MSU) made field goals of 24 and 38 yards while also averaging 40.8 yards on six punts, including a 58-yarder against Delaware State.
 
Davius Richard (NCCU) completed 23 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 18 yards against Bethune-Cookman. 
 
Darius Royster (NCCU) amassed 12 tackles, including 2.5 stops for a loss of 23 yards with 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries against Bethune-Cookman.

 
Hawks Men's Golf Sit in 16th After 36-Holes

MORGANTON, N.C.-The Chowan Men's Golf team completed 36-holes in the first day of play at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Belmont Abbey currently sits in first place after carding a 291 in the first round and 274 in the second. Anderson follows in second place after they posted a 287 and 279 round one and round two score respectively.  Erskine currently sits in third place after recording 568 day one score.

The Hawks carded a 323 in the first round before posting a 328 in the second to currently sit in 16th place overall.

Currently leading the field is Ben Loudermilk from Belmont Abbey who carded a 72 and 64 on Monday.

Pacing Chowan is Dale Davis who currently sits in T72. Davis posted a 78 in his first round of play before posting an 81 in the second round.

Following Davis is Noah Pendergrass who shot an 80 and 82 on Monday to currently sit T81, while teammate Graham Cowan is currently T87 after he carded a 165 on the first day of competition.

Also competing for the Hawks is Tyler Pittman and Daniel Ivanouski who currently sit in 92 and 96 place respectively.

Howard Bowling Opens Season Strong at the Bud Whitman Memorial

READING, Pa. (October 13, 2019) –
Howard University women’s bowling team grabbed four victories in the season opener at the Bud Whitman Memorial, hosted by Chestnut Hill College.

 

Junior Carolyn Williams (Glen Burnie, Md.) led the Bison, averaging 181.2 in five traditional matches, including a game-high 220 in the win over Long Island-Brooklyn (LIU-Brooklyn).

 

Saturday (Oct. 12), HU won a pair of Baker Matches over Kutztown, 1,034-934, and Mount Aloysius, 923-805.

 

The following day (Oct. 13), Howard opened the morning with back-to-back victories over rival Coppin State, 813-812, and LIU-Brooklyn, 879-877.

 

Second-year bowler Janae Bradford (Chicago) produced a 179.2 average, including a weekend-best 214 in a tough loss against Duquesne, 855-970.

 

On Oct. 19-20, HU (4-6) will be competing in the Mount Shootout in Frederick, Md., hosted by Mount St. Mary's.

Rams Cruise in a Three-Set Win Over Johnson C. Smith

WSSU dominates from beginning to end to claim conference win

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (9-6, 6-1 CIAA) clicked on all cylinders when the team took a three-set win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (3-7, 2-5 CIAA), Monday evening. The Rams dominated the match from the very beginning on their way to the win.

 

The Rams put on an impressive performance in every aspect of the match on their way to the win. The team finished the match with 42 kills while holding the Golden Bulls to just 26 kills. The Rams also had 17 total blocks (three solo) as well. WSSU senior outside hitter Ytae Cobb led the way for the team with 10 kills in the match. Sophomore outside hitter Tailar Jackson added nine kills with seven digs. Freshman middle blocker Niyonna McIntyre also had a great game with seven kills and four total blocks (none solo).

 

Winston-Salem State opened the match in impressive fashion when they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the first set. The Rams opened the set with a 9-1 run to jump ahead of the Golden Bulls. The team kept their eight-point lead 20-12 before a service ace and a kill from freshman Laiyah Haley left the team on top, 22-12. The Rams went on to hold on to their 10-point lead and sealed the win, 25-15.

 

The second set was a much more competitive one as the Rams saw their early lead whittled down late. However, the team held off the late rally to claim the win. Once again, it was the Rams who jumped out to the early lead when they took a 9-3 lead over the Golden Bulls. The Rams were able to go ahead by as many as nine points, 21-12. From there, Johnson C. Smith went got on a rally when they erased the WSSU lead with a nine-point run. The effort left the Rams and Golden Bulls tied, 21-21. The two teams traded back-to-back two-point scores to tie the set, 23-23. The ended the set with a Cobb kill and a block from Cobb and freshman outside hitter Sanaa Lanier that ended the set, 25-23.

 

After the scare in the second set, the Rams broke out with a great effort to seal the match and claimed the win. For the second time in the match, the Rams took a 9-1 lead in the set. From there, the team went on to take an 18-12 lead before breaking out for four straight points to take a 22-12 lead. From there, the two teams would just go on to trade points until a kill from Cobb ended the match with a 25-15 third set win.

 

With the victory, the Rams improve to 9-6 overall and 6-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The Rams will return to action this weekend when they head to nearby Salisbury, N.C. to take on the Livingstone Blue Bears in a 6:00 p.m. match. CROSS COUNTRY

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Alexia Phifer captured her first individual title on Saturday as she won the 6k race at the CNU Cross Country Invitational held at Lee Hall.

Phifer covered the course in 24:30.30 to outdistance Abigail Shelly of Eastern Mennonite who was almost 10 seconds behind in 24:40.16.

As a team, the Lady Pirates took third in the event with 62 points.  Eastern Mennonite won the team title with 33 points, while Christopher Newport was second with 49.

FOOTBALL

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Shai McKenzie ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns as Hampton dropped its Big South Conference opener 35-27 at Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb opened the scoring on its second drive going 85 yards in five plays as Kalen Whitlow connected with Jaylin Cagle on a 45-yard scoring pass.  The extra-point put the Runnin’ Bulldogs up 7-0 with 8:53 left in the first.

Hampton responded with a 77-yard, 11-play drive that resulted in a 27-yard Evan Lomax field goal with 3:58 left to trim the deficit to 7-3.

Cagle put the hosts up 14-3 with 1:16 left in the first as he finished a 65-yard drive with a 13-yard run through the middle.

 McKenzie got Hampton’s first touchdown on the first play of the second quarter with a 46-yard run as Hampton trailed 14-10 just nine seconds into the quarter.

The Pirates forced a turnover on the ensuing kickoff as Raeshad Herriott forced a fumble that Mason King recovered to put Hampton on the GWU 35.  McKenzie scored a second touchdown on a one-yard run on fourth and goal to put Hampton up 17-14 with 11:17 left in the half.

Gardner-Webb responded with a 70-yard scoring pass from Whitlow to Devron Harper to lead 21-17 with 10:44 remaining in the second.

Hampton answered that long scoring pass with a 39-yarder from Deondre Francois to KeyRon Catlett as the Pirates regained the advantage at 24-21 at the 9:03 mark.

The scoring got going late in the third as Gardner-Webb took a 28-24 lead on a three-yard scoring pass from Whitlow to Izaiah Gathers with 1:41 left in the third.

Hampton got the lead trimmed to 28-27 after a 37-yard Lomax field goal with 12:37 remaining in the game on a 46-yard, 10-play drive. The hosts pushed the lead back to 35-27 after a 38-yard touchdown pass  from Jordan Smith to Gathers with 9:40 left.

Francois was 29-of-51 for 357 yards and one touchdown in the air.  Catlett and Cortez Lewis were the leading receivers with seven catches each as Catlett had 110 yards and Lewis had 78. Oral Varcciann was the leading tackler for Hampton with nine and two pass breakups.

Hampton (3-3, 0-1) now visits Campbell on October 19 for a 4pm kick in Buies Creek, N.C.

WOMEN’S SOCCER 

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University soccer team fell 4-1 to the visiting Eagles of Winthrop University on a sunny Saturday Afternoon. Freshman, Mikayla Martin would score the only goal for the Lady Pirates.

Winthrop scored first as Keeley Leising set up Morrison Trnavsky to take a 1-0 lead at the 16-minute mark.

Hampton would respond, as Martin headed in a cross kick from Isobel Finnegan in the 29th minute mark to tie the match at 1-1.

Natalie Royaards drilled a free kick to push the lead 2-1 at the 31 minute mark.  The Eagles would score two goals in the second half to push the match open 4-1.

Both teams would tie in the shots 11-11, as Nadia Bensarghin finished with three saves.

Hampton will be on the road Wednesday, October 16 at 4pm, as they take on Radford University.

VOLLEYBALL

HAMPTON, Va. – Hampton University finished their back to back two-game Big South Conference home matches on Saturday where the visiting Spartans of USC Upstate scored a 25-10, 25-21, 25-18 win to defeat the Lady Pirates in three sets in Holland Hall.

Clara Smith had 11 kills, Gabby Calloway added seven and 16 digs, while Genevieve Reynolds collected six kills and Jessica Pugh had 11 digs.

In the second set, Hampton would keep the score close but USC Upstate took a 23-21 lead after a kill by Smith. USC Upstate would call a timeout and would score the final two points to win 25-21. The third set saw USC Upstate lead 21-15, but two kills by Sydney Sumner would led to a USC Upstate timeout. USC Upstate scored four of the next five points to seal the match.  

Hampton will be back on the hardwood Friday October 18, as they square off against Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team picked up the first set before falling in four to Conference Carolinas foe, King, on Saturday afternoon.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the charge with a double-double posting a career-high 16 kills and 22 digs.  Sydney Hiner would add seven kills and 15 digs.

Katie Houston recorded a career-high 42 digs.  Ciara Ortega produced 35 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Both teams traded points early in the set.  Alyssa Carroll would give the Hawks the first kill of the match.  A run of kills by Anixa Rosa-MartinezSydney Hiner, and Hannah Sladick evened the set at 12-all.

The Hawks would stay in front with kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam to give Chowan a 20-16 lead.

Sydney Hiner's kill and Alyssa Carroll's block forced a King timeout, 23-19.  Carroll would finish off the set with a kill to give the Hawks a 25-20 victory.

Second Set:

The Hawks would open the set with the first three points on a kill by Hannah Sladick and Sydney Hiner.

The Tornado countered with nine straight points to take the lead 11-4.  Hannah Sladick ended the run with a kill.

Sydney Hiner sparked a run by the Hawks with an ace followed by a kill by Hannah Sladick and Anixa Rosa-Martinez.  Hiner ended the run with an ace to trim the deficit to 13-12.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez added a kill as King pulled away 20-14.  Alyssa Carrol registered a block and Sydney Hiner added a kill to trim the deficit.

King would take the second set, 25-19.

Third Set:

King opened the third set on a 5-1 run with Chloe Putnam adding the lone kill for the Hawks.  Nyah Powers posted a block to close the disadvantage to 5-3.

The Tornado added to their lead, 12-6, with Anixa Rosa-Martinez notching a kill.  Rosa-Martinez added two more kills along with Tornado miscues to close the gap to 13-12.

Both teams went on mini runs before settling the score at 17-all.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez added a kill and two service aces.

King fought ahead to a 24-19 lead.  Alyssa Carroll and two kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez pulled the Hawks to within two, 24-22, before King finished the set with a kill.

Fourth Set:

Anixa Rosa-Martinez was the only offense for the Hawks early in the set.  Sydney Hiner evened the set at 7-all with a kill.  King countered with four straight kills.

The Tornado added to their advantage with five straight points to lead 18-11.

A block by Alyssa Carroll and Hannah Sladick paired with a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Carroll trimmed the deficit to 20-18.

Chowan was unable to gain any ground as King took the set and match 25-21.
