NCCU VOLLEYBALL TO HOST BREAST CANCER AWARENESS “ACE BREAST CANCER” GAME

Eagles Return Home for Two Conference Match-Ups

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s volleyball team welcomes Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes, Savannah State and South Carolina State this weekend in Durham. The Eagles will take on the Tigers on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., inside McDougald-McLendon Gym followed by the Bulldogs on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. at the L.T. Walker Complex on the campus of NCCU. Admission is free.

During the Friday match-up against SSU, the Eagles will be honoring Breast Cancer Awareness month. NCCU will compete with a pink volleyball, the maroon & gray cheerleaders will be in attendance dressed in pink and Breast Cancer Awareness facts will be announced throughout the game. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink to the event.



Entering the Friday match-up the Eagles are led offensively by junior Da’sha Brown and senior Kalin Russell. Brown leads the team with 154 kills on 600 attempts, averaging 2.41 kills per set while Russell has contributed a team second-best 137 kills on 362 attempts (2.14 per set).

Contributing to the offensive success of Brown and Russell is the junior/sophomore setting duo of Alice Genna and Melissa Rabell Pineiro, who have dished a total of 450 out of the Eagles' 497 total assists with 285 and 165 respectively.

On the defensive end, rookie Kelsey Murphy leads the way digging 148 of the opponents' attacks, averaging 2.31 per set. Showing strength on the net for the Eagles is the senior/junior duo of Russell and Ashley McCarthy. Russell has collected a team-high 49 blocks while McCarthy has amassed 48 blocks with a team-best 11 solo blocks.


As a team, the Eagles have amassed 546 kills, averaging 8.5 per set, while dropping in 50 service aces. Defensively, they have notched 768 digs and 107 blocks.
