LADY VIKINGS FALTER IN 68-47 ROAD LOSS TO JOHNSON C. SMITH April Emory 01/07/12 Turnovers, Poor Shooting Costly in ECSU’s First CIAA Loss of the Year CHARLOTTE, NC- Stephanie Harper posted a game high double-double of 20 points and a career high 21 rebounds but it was not enough as Johnson C. Smith University topped Elizabeth City State 68-47 Saturday evening at Brayboy Gymnasium. The Lady Vikings shot a season worst 28% (18-64) their 47 points is their lowest output of the year. The Lady Golden Bulls extend their win streak to three games improving to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the CIAA. After a closely contested beginning, JCSU went on a 13-0 run to seize a 27-14 lead with 2:02 left in the first half. During that run the Lady Vikings were scoreless from the floor for nearly six and a half minutes. Back-to-back layups by Harper and De’Rya Wylie in the final minute broke the ECSU drought but they trailed 29-18 at the intermission. ECSU trimmed the lead to seven in the second half but that would be as close as they would get as JCSU maintained a double digit lead from the 16 minute mark until the final buzzer. The Lady Golden Bulls converted 11 of 18 shots from the free throw line in the second half and outscored ECSU 8-0 in fast break points. JCSU’s reserves bested the Lady Viking bench 26-6 and ECSU shot only 18 free throws in the contest compared to 34 for the Lady Golden Bulls. LaQwesha Gamble scored a team high 19 for Johnson C. Smith. ECSU (7-5, CIAA 1-1) will wrap up their three game road swing on Monday when they travel to face Fayetteville State University. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm at Capel Arena. |
