LADY HAWKS SET FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT ROAD CONTEST, TAKE ON OLD DOMINION ON WEDNESDAY DAVE VATZ 12/19/11 UMES looking to snap a four-game losing streak NORFOLK, Va. - Before the holiday break, the Lady Hawks will play their fifth straight road game as they head down Route 13 to take on Old Dominion on Wednesday for an 11:30 a.m. matinee. This is the second time UMES will play a Colonial Athletic Association opponent in Virginia, playing close with James Madison in a 61-53 defeat. The Lady Hawks are looking to snap a four-game winning streak. - LAST TIME OUT: The Lady Hawks took on Big East opponent South Florida, falling to the Bulls 71-50 in Tampa in the team's fourth straight road contest. UMES and USF hit shots early, with each side scoring five baskets in succession. The game stayed close until USF built runs of 9-0 and 8-0 in the first half, giving the Bulls a 16-point lead going into the locker room. UMES tried to keep pace against the fast Bulls, led by Amber Cook drawing fouls and scoring 15 points, but USF took the victory in the end. Cook added five rebounds along with her season high in points. Adobi Agbasi earned block number 150 in her career with six blocks, adding six points and nine rebounds. USF's Kaneisha Saunders scored 20 points while Jasmine Wynne got 19 with nine boards and four steals. - SERIES HISTORY: UMES and Old Dominion will face each other for the first time ever on Wednesday. The Lady Hawks will play a Colonial Athletic Association opponent for the third time this season, previously falling to Towson and James Madison on the road. The Lady Monarchs are coming off a game against a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team, defeating North Carolina A&T on December 18th. - SCOUTING THE LADY MONARCHS: Old Dominion stands at 3-8 after winning their last two games. The Lady Monarchs are under the leadership of 1st-year head coach Karen Barefoot after 24-year coach Wendy Larry stepped down. The team was picked to finish 5th in the CAA after appearing in last year's WNIT. Preseason All-CAA center Tia Lewis, transfer from Central Florida, nearly averages a double-double with 18.7 points and 9.5 rebounds a game, shooting 51.7% from the field. Guard Ashley Betz- White leads ODU with 29 assists, getting 9.5 points a game. - COACH BATCHELOR APPROACHING 100TH UMES WIN: With the Lady Hawks winning two games so far this season, coach Fred Batchelor is just three wins away from reaching his 100th win with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, currently standing at 97-115 in his eight seasons. This will make Coach Batchelor the first in UMES women's basketball history to reach that mark. - AGBASI REACHES 150-BLOCK MILESTONE: With a season high six blocks against South Florida, Adobi Agbasi stands at 150 blocks in her career. This season, Agbasi has 19 blocks. She stands second all-time in blocks in UMES history behind Kristi Veltkamp, who finished with 231 blocks from 2004 to 2008. - NO-SCORE ZONE: UMES is allowing just 56.4 points per game , standing in the top- 100 in the country after last weekend's games. Three UMES opponents, Canisius, American and Delaware State, all scored less than 43 points. - ALL-AROUND AMBER: Amber Cook is in the top-three on the team in four major categories. Leading the team with 21 assists, Cook is second on UMES with eight points a game and third with 5.1 rebounds a game and a steal a contest. The senior guard has scored at least eight points and grabbed five rebounds in three of her last four games. - CHELSEA LEADING THE WAY: Chelsea Sanders leads UMES with 12.1 points per contest, earning double digit points seven games this season. She also sports a team high 13 steals and is second on UMES with 5.6 rebounds a game. |
