FRANKFORT, KY – Kentucky State University Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Serena King-Coleman, has announced the signing of five student-athletes for the 2011-12 season. The five includes three freshmen and two juniors.
“We are excited about this year’s recruiting class,” said King-Coleman. “We needed more height and athleticism in the frontcourt and backcourt to give us more scoring opportunities on the perimeter and in the paint.”
Jasmine Davis, a transfer from Southeast Missouri State University, started ten of the 26 games in which she played during the 2010-11 season. She led her team in assists (1.9 per game) and was third in free throw percentage (80%).
“Jasmine will be a leader on and off the court while providing scoring on the perimeter,” said King-Coleman. “She has the ability to control the tempo of the game while threatening any team with her strong defensive presence.”
Kristi Malohi, a native of Warner Robbins, Ga., comes to the Brettes from Houston County High School. A Region 4-A All-Star, Malohi averaged 10.5 points and five rebounds per game her senior year. “We are looking for Kristi to be a fierce rebounder, run the floor in transition and establish a strong defensive presence in the post,” stated King-Coleman.
The Brettes have also signed Tiffany Merritt, a transfer from Saint Paul’s College. Merritt, averaged 8.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. As a post player, Merritt will provide the Brettes with more scoring in the paint but can also score from the perimeter. She will also strengthen KSU’s rebounding corps.
Rounding out this year’s signees for the Brettes are Shayla Moore from Detroit, Mich., and Brielle Newton from Cincinnati, Ohio. Moore, a graduate of Southfield Christian High School in Detroit, averaged a double-double her senior year with 12.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. Newton averaged 14.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game and was selected as an Ohio Division I Honorable Mention All-Star and First Team All-Conference in the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference.
“Shayla will be more of a utility player for us,” said King-Coleman. “She has the ability to score on the perimeter, as well as post up smaller guards. Brielle adds more athleticism, shot blocking and rebounding to our post position.”
