KSU Softball Defeats Stillman in Second Round of SIAC Championship Danielle Wright 04/21/11 COLUMBUS, Ga.—The Thorobrette Softball team opened the 2011 SIAC Softball Championship with a win, defeating the Lady Tigers of Stillman 9-1. Junior Danielle Garay pitched a complete game, with a shutout through three innings. In the first inning, KSU loaded the bases but Stillman held their ground, forcing two straight outs at home plate. With two outs, and Lorena Villamar up to bat, Stillman’s pitcher, Kylie McMcurray, threw a wild pitch and KSU’s Jenna Shingary scored to put the Brettes up 1-0. Stillman’s Gabrielle Quarles opened the second inning with a hit to left field. After Michaela Norman struck out looking, Danielle Hewett reached on a fielder’s choice, but Quarles was out on the play (third to second base). Brittany Perry fouled out to third baseman, Shenaaz Burrell to end the Lady Tigers’ second inning. KSU was held scoreless in the second inning, but scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits and two errors to take a 5-1 lead. Stillman got on the board in the top of the fourth after a leadoff single by Anjelica Nixon. Nixon then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Janay Hudson and then scored on a double to center by Quarles. Norman then struck out swinging, followed by Hewett popping up to second baseman, Jasmine McQueen to end the Lady Tiger fourth. The Lady Tigers then held the Thorobrettes scoreless in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Perry led off with a single to left field, but Chelsea Reese, McMurray and January Page were put out in order. The Brettes came out swinging in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits and one error and ending the game with a 9-1 mercy rule. The Thorobrettes advance to the quarterfinals on Friday, April 22, 2011 to play Fort Valley State at 2 p.m. All games are held at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Ga. Admission is free and the public and media are encouraged to attend. |
