Terry leads WSSU to Senior Day win over Lady Broncos

WINSTON-SALEM, N C – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (25-11, 15-1 CIAA) broke out late for a 9-1 Senior Day win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (18-27, 11-6 CIAA), Sunday. The Lady Rams scored seven unanswered runs in the final two innings to take the win.

The Lady Rams got the better of an offensive battle as the two teams combined for 16 hits. The Lady Rams finished the game with nine hits and took advantage of three FSU fielding errors. The senior duo of Bonika Terry and Kayla Woodbury led the team to the win with five RBI and four runs scored between them. Terry finished the game with a one-for-two performance at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI while Woodbury added two hits in two at-bats with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

After taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning, the Lady Rams scored five fourth-inning runs along with a pair of fifth-inning runs to seal the win.

Sophomore pitcher Tiffany Burgess (12-6) took the pitching win with three and a third innings of action with just four hits allowed and one earned run in the game. Fellow sophomore Brittany Lane came in for the save with one and two-thirds innings in the circle with just three hits allowed and no runs earned.

With the win, the Lady Rams wrap up conference play with a 15-1 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and a perfect 10-0 record in the CIAA Southern Division to take division’s regular season championship. The Lady Rams will return to action at the 2011 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament.
