Lady Rams Break Out Late in 9-1 Win Over North Carolina Central

Senior Kayla Woodbury goes three-for-four with four RBI

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (23-11) broke out their offense to pick up a 9-1 win over the North Carolina Central Lady Eagles (6-28), Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Rams had a great offensive effort, scoring nine unanswered runs to take home the win and complete the doubleheader sweep over the rival Lady Eagles.

The Lady Rams had a big offensive day to score the win with 10 team hits in the game. Senior infielder Kayla Woodbury led the way for the Lady Rams, accounting for five of the WSSU runs in the game. For the game, she went three-for-four from the plate with a run scored and four RBI. She was the only WSSU player with more than one hit in the game.

The team also benefitted from a great pitching performance by the sophomore tandem of Tiffany Burgess and Brittany Lane. Burgess (11-6) scored the pitching win with three innings in the circle with four hits and one earned run allowed. For the game, she finished with three strikeouts. Lane finished the game with two innings of action with three strikeouts and no runs allowed.

The Lady Rams opened the game on a high note with three first inning runs. Woodbury opened the day with a two-RBI double. She went on to score on a wild pitch as well to put the Lady Rams on top 3-1 after the first inning. The team added a pair of third inning runs when sophomore infielder Britney Cato drove in a run with an RBI sacrifice fly. Senior outfielder Candace Spinks added an RBI single as well to put the team ahead 5-1.

The Lady Rams closed out the game in style with a big fifth inning. Burgess opened the scoring effort with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single by senior infielder Bonika Terry that put the game within reach, 7-1. Woodbury would end the game with a two-RBI triple that put the Lady Rams ahead 9-1 and sealed the win.

The Lady Rams will return to action, Saturday when the team hosts the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Twin City Park.
