WSSU takes 5-4 win over Lady Bears to close season with 16-0 CIAA record

RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (24-1, 16-0 CIAA) closed out the regular season in style with a 5-4 win over the Shaw Lady Bears (11-7, 11-2 CIAA), Thursday afternoon. The Lady Rams completed the season sweep in a match that was suspended last weekend due to inclement weather and had to be completed Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Rams bounced back from a pair of doubles losses with four singles wins to seal the 5-4 clutch win and claimed the 2011 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division championship with a perfect 16-0 record in CIAA play.

The day began on a slow note for the Lady Rams with a pair of 8-6 doubles losses in the first and second positions, but the freshman tandem of Chelsea Chatman and Dominique Lindsay battled their way to pick up an 8-0 doubles win.

With a pair of doubles losses, the Lady Rams needed a stellar effort to overcome a 2-1 deficit in singles play. The Lady Rams got their answer with wins in the final four positions. Sophomore Bianka Locklear was awarded a win when her opponent retired. However, things weren’t as easy for the remainder of the field as sophomore Kalin Jarvis took a 6-1, 6-4 singles win while Lindsay and Chatman both took home 6-0 wins to wrap up the win.

With the win, the Lady Rams take the 2011 CIAA Southern Division Regular Season Championship and will be the number one seeds at next weekend’s CIAA Women’s Tennis Championships.
