Six Players Earn SIAC Softball Weekly Honors

Atlanta, GA—Clark Atlanta third baseman Elizabeth Handy and Albany State catcher Chaconna Marks have been named SIAC Softball East Division Co-Players of the Week while Benedict sophomore Lakeeya Ramsey and Claflin freshman Shaquisha Woods have been named East Division Co-Pitchers of the Week. Miles short stop Tiffany Roberts and Stillman pitcher Brittany Perry were named SIAC Softball West Division Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week respectively.

Handy, a native of Frankfort, CT, was strong from the plate recording eight hits, including three home runs, a triple, and three doubles, with a .666 batting average and a 1.833 slugging percentage. The 5-8 freshman drove in 10 runs and scored eight runs while also stealing two bases. Handy had a .782 on-base percentage and was solid on defense with a .812 fielding percentage. She helped lead the Lady Panthers to a 4-0 record for the week with two wins each against Paine and Fisk.

In six games last week, Marks led Albany State in hitting, going 13-for-20 with four home runs and two doubles while batting .650 along with a 1.350 slugging percentage. The Covington, GA native scored nine runs and drove in 13 RBIs while stealing a base with a .682 on-base percentage. Defensively, the 5-8 freshman had a .885 fielding percentage while helping lead the Lady Golden Rams to wins over Claflin, Benedict, and Fort Valley State.

In five appearances, Ramsey went 3-1, including four complete games, with a save. The Summerville, SC native threw 16 strikeouts. At the plate, Ramsey took advantage of opposing teams walking teammate Cherae Rice, currently the nation’s leader in batting average, by going 8-for-19 with a trio of three-run homeruns and two doubles while driving in 14 runs and scoring eight. She batted .421 with a 1.000 slugging percentage to help Benedict to 4-2 record with victories over Johnson C. Smith, Paine, and Albany State.

Woods pitched 21 total innings, including two complete games, with 16 strikeouts and just two walks. The Chester, SC native finished with a record of 3-1 with a save while posting an ERA of 3.66.

Roberts, a native of Prattville, AL, recorded 12 hits with three homeruns, a triple, and a double while batting .461 with a .923 slugging percentage. The 5-8 sophomore drove in 10 runs and scored 13 runs while going 14-for-14 in stolen bases. She helped lead the Lady Golden Bears to a 6-2 record with two wins apiece against Tuskegee, Spelman, and Division I Alabama A & M.

Perry pitched 33 total innings, including six complete games and two shutouts, with 23 strikeouts and just one walk. The Enterprise, AL native went 4-2 for the week with a 3.39 ERA while batting .375 from the plate in nine games last week.
