DELAWARE STATE OUTSOARS HAWKS IN A PAIR, 13-3, 12-1 G. STAN BRADLEY 04/09/11 UMES drops to 1-4 in conference play. PRINCESS ANNE, Md.-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks couldn't keep with the hot bats of Delaware State University (DSU) today as the Hornets took a double header from UMES 13-3 and 12-1. UMES managed just 11 hits over both games, three coming from the bat of Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) as DSU countered with an impressive 26 hits. In game one the teams started slow, blanking each other in the first frame and both scoring a lone run in the second. DSU scored with a double in the inning while the Hawks' Lisa Bates (Blauvelt, N.Y.) doubled to left to plate Jade Nelson (Lithonia, Ga.) who led-off the inning with a walk. The Hornets then posted three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead. UMES got one of those back on Charlise Castro's (Saugerties, N.Y.) league-leading 11th home run, a shot to dead center, to cut the lead in half. The Hornet offense however wasn't having any of that as they posted three more runs in the fourth taking advantage of four hits and a Hawk error to lead 7-2. UMES again got a run back as Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) led-off with a double to right center and later scored on an error. That would be the end of the Hawk offense however as DSU would go on to plate one in the fifth and five in the sixth to end the game at 13-3 one inning early. Gurrola took the loss for UMES allowing all 13 runs, seven of which were earned, a pair of walks, 15 hits and striking out three. Ashlyn Cmapbell would get the win, working just three and a third innings, allowing all three runs and walking four. Jordan Reid would lead the Hornet offense going 3-4 with three runs while Andrea Waters would tally three RBI and a pair of runs on a 2-4 game. Game two would be all Hornets. They would score two runs in t eh first, five in the second, four in the fourth and one in the fifth to end the game in five innings. UMES mustered just one run, that in the final inning. Yasmine Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) would get credit for that as she would walk and score on a James single to right. The Lady Hawks mustered just six hits in the game, two in the first inning and one every frame after as they were unable to touch Casey Beighley who got the win in three innings of work, allowing four hits and one walk. Amber Corrigan (Montgomery, N.Y.) took the loss for UMES, giving up 11 runs, nine earned in four innings. Reid was again solid as the lead-off hitter for DSU, going 2-2 with three RBI and three runs. Stephanie Martello was also perfect with a 3-3 trip, netting three RBI and two runs. The two were responsible for 11 of the team's 12 runs. Ashley Davis also had a pair of RBI for the visiting Hornets. The losses drop the Hawks to 6-27 on the season and 1-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. DSU goes to 21-10 and 4-1 in MEAC play. UMES tries to right the ship tomorrow as they host DSU in the third and final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Lady Hawks Field in Princess Anne. |
