Houston, TX-Texas Southern point guard Kevin Galloway recorded his first triple-double as a Tiger in the team’s most dominating win of the season. Galloway recorded 12 rebounds, 10 points and 10 assists in tonight’s 66-41 victory over Grambling State.

Texas Southern is now 5-0 in conference and 6-9 overall. The next best start in recent history was in the 2002-03 season when the Tigers went 9-1 to start conference play. That lone loss was against Prairie View in the third game of the season. TSU won the SWAC Championship Tournament that year.

There was a sense that something special was going to happen tonight after Galloway stole the ball and slammed it home for the first score of the game. He then dished out his first assists of the night to Daniel King who got a reverse dunk out of the deal. TSU went up 16-9 at the midway point of the first half. They ended the period with a 7 point advantage (26-19).

“We came out loose and played to the level of our competition in the first half, which is uncharacteristic of us,” said head coach Tony Harvey.

The TSU Tigers opened up the game in the second half where Travele Jones picked up 12 of his 17 points for the night. Texas Southern was up by 19 at the 10 minute mark. They hit a game high 25 point lead (61-36) on a dunk by Jones with 2 minutes left in the game. The Tigers finished with a 25 point advantage.

Galloway and Jones were the only TSU Tigers who scored in double figures. Lawrence Johnson-Danner and Justin Ray each had 8 points. Harrison Smith had six points and six rebounds.

“I saw some things that we still need to work on, but I’m happy with the win,” Harvey said. Now we will get ready for our next opponent. We don’t take anyone lightly and this will be a good gauge to see where we are and where we need to be.”

Texas Southern will play their next two games on the road. They will face Arkansas Pine Bluff on January 22 and Mississippi Valley on January 24th which will be on ESPNU.
