Salley, Sommerville, and Matthewis Lead SIAC Basketball Weekly Honors

Atlanta, GA—Claflin guard Eric Salley and Kentucky State center Alex Sommerville were named SIAC Men’s Co-Players of the Week after impressive performances this past week. Kentucky State guard Cortney Matthewis earned SIAC Women’s Player of the Week after her strong performance against Lane while Clark Atlanta guard Antonio Burch and Paine forward Baiesha Johnson were named SIAC Newcomers of the Week.

Salley continued his impressive season, scoring a career-high 40 points in the Panthers overtime win against LeMoyne-Owen. The 6-0 senior from Smoaks, SC also added three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Sommerville, a 6-9 senior from Indianapolis, IN, had a strong performance this week, nearly posting a triple-double with a season-high 10 points, game-high 10 rebounds, and a career-high eight blocks. He helped lead the Thorobreds to a 79-56 win over Lane College.

Matthewis, a native of Houston, TX, put up a game-high 21 points, six rebounds, and one assist, shooting an impressive .600 from the field. Defensively, the 5-11 junior finished with two steals and one block to help lead the Thorobrettes to a win over Lane.

A native of Detroit, MI, Burch scored 18 points in Clark Atlanta’s 65-57 win over Paine College. The 5-11 junior also had four rebounds and two assists to go along with two steals on defense.

Johnson, a 5-11 freshman, averaged 9.5 points and three rebounds in two games. Defensively, the Brunswick, GA native averaged an impressive four steals and one block, helping the Lady Lions defeat Clark Atlanta, 60-58, to win their first game of the season.
