Rams earn honors after claiming tournament championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams’ great start to the season continues to reap rewards as senior forward Paul Davis was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Player of the Week while WSSU men’s basketball head coach Bobby Collins has been named the CIAA Coach of the Week, Monday afternoon.

The WSSU tandem had to work hard to earn the honor as the Rams claimed the 36th Annual Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament championship with back-to-back come-from-behind wins over the Flagler Saints and the host Rollins Tars. Under Collins’ guidance, the Rams fought back from a nine-point deficit with just under seven minutes left to play to not only force overtime, but the claim the 84-76 victory. The team overcame an even larger challenge in the tournament’s championship game when they overcame a 14-point Rollins lead with 15:36 left to play to claim the 77-70 win and the tournament title.

While Collins’ leadership on the sidelines guided the Rams to the victories, it was Davis who led the team’s efforts on the court with back-to-back stellar performances. For the week, Davis averaged 17.5 points per game along with 13.0 rebounds and totaled seven blocked shots. After an impressive 13 points and 12 rebounds against Flagler, he stepped up his efforts in the tournament’s championship game with 22 points and 14 rebounds. For his efforts, Davis was named the tournament MVP.
