NCCU will travel to Carmichael Auditorium for fourth series meeting

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team (2-10) will travel to Tar Heel country on Monday, Jan. 3 to battle the No. 10 team in the nation, North Carolina (13-0), in Carmichael Auditorium. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

While NCCU and its Atlantic Coast Conference foe have not met on the hardwood this season, the two programs both participated in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Honolulu, Hawaii (Nov. 26-28). While the Lady Eagles completed the event with three losses, the Tar Heels earned their third tournament title.

On Monday evening, NCCU and UNC will meet for the fourth time in the last three seasons. Carolina governs the series with a 3-0 lead. All three meetings have taken place in Chapel Hill, N.C., as the Lady Eagles have yet to host the cross-town foes.

The last time they met was on March 14, 2010 in the newly renovated Carmichael Auditorium, where the Lady Eagles fell 88-66 after holding three first-half leads. Four NCCU student-athletes scored in double-figures in the loss, including a 14-point off the bench outing from Shanise Blanks and a 13-point performance from Blaire Houston.

Five Tar Heels netted double figures in a balanced offensive effort, led by center Chay Shegog with 17 points. Laura Broomfield stormed off the Carolina bench for her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

NCCU enters the contest coming off a 67-56 loss to UNC Asheville on Dec. 29 in Durham, N.C. Leading-scorer Jori Nwachukwu obtained her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and snatching 10 rebounds. Second leading-scorer Chasidy Williams netted 12 points in the paint and grabbed seven rebounds. The loss dropped NCCU to 2-10 on the season.

Carolina hosts the Lady Eagles with perfect overall record of 14-0 after a 21-point win over Gardner-Webb on Dec. 31. Italee Lucas scored 29 points in the win, including sinking five three-pointers in the first half. Shegog scored 16 points for the Tar Heels, while Jessica Breland had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Cetera Degraffenreid commanded the offense with 15 assists.

This season, Nwachukwu leads the Lady Eagles in average points per game (13.7), rebounds (8.2 pg), minutes (29.0 pg) and with 13 total blocks. Williams trails Nwachukwu with 11.9 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game, while Blanks has distributed 15 assists and stolen 23 opponents’ possessions.

UNC’s offense is lead by Lucas (18.8 ppg) and Breland (13.5 ppg), while Breland leads the Tar Heel rebounding at 8.4 boards per contest. Laura Broomfield assists Breland in snatching boards with 7.5 per game. Waltiea Rolle has blocked 32 shots this season, while Degraffenreid has dispersed 84 assists and stolen 47 opponents’ possessions.

As a unit, NCCU scores 50.2 points per game, hits 20 percent from behind the arc and 64 percent from the free throw line. UNC averages 86.2 points per game, shoots 34 percent from the long range and 70 percent from the charity stripe.
