Hampton’s Morgan and Funches and Norfolk State’s Williams Earn Top Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., January 3, 2011 – Hampton guard Kwame Morgan was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Norfolk State guard Pendarvis Williams was named the Rookie of the Week and Hampton forward Charles Funches earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor respectively.

Morgan (G, 6-3, 205, Jr., Largo, Md.) was selected to the 2010 Hilltop Challenge All-Tournament Team after averaging 22.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists to lead the Pirates to a 2-1 mark in non-conference play last week. He also sank 11-of-30 3-pointers in the three-game stretch. His standout performance includes the game winning 3-pointer to cap a 29 point and six rebound performance in a 77-75 win over Colorado State.

Williams (G, 6-6, 185, Fr., Philadelphia, Pa.) posted back-to-back double digit scoring performances with 13 and 16 against Ohio and Duquesne. He was perfect from the charity stripe in both games (7-of-7) and shot 50-percent from the floor (9-of-18) including 40-percent from 3-point range. He also added four rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal in the pair of non-conference games.

Funches (F, 6-8, 140, Sr., Jersey City, NJ) tallied 30 rebounds, five steals and four blocks in three non-conference games last week for the Pirates. He posted a double-double with a career-high 16 boards, along with 14 points, and four blocked shots in a 78-65 win against Dominican.

Other Top Performances

Hillary Haley (UMES) shot 7-of-12 from the field to lead the Hawks with 18 points and four rebounds against Colorado.

Dewayne Jackson (MSU) recorded 25 points, connecting on 42-percent from the field, with eight rebounds in 39 minutes of play in a thrilling 67-66 win over Robert Morris.

C.J. Reed (B-CU) was a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line as he tallied 22 points, three rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 40 minutes against Jacksonville.

Mike Phillips (HOW) averaged 21.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in losses to Rider and George Washington.
