Rams Return to Action Against Flagler at 36th Annual Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament Trevin Q. Goodwin 12/28/10

WSSU seeking fifth straight win to open 2010-11 season

WINTER PARK, FL – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-0) will shake off their chills as the team returns to action in the opening game of the 36th Annual Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 p.m. The Rams will open the tournament with a tough match-up as the team will face the Flagler Saints (6-1) in the opening game. With over three weeks since their last competition, the Rams are well-rested and ready to keep their strong start to the season going.

Wednesday’s game will be the Rams’ first game in 25 days as the team last faced competition on December 4th when the team dominated Bluefield College in a 77-55 home victory. The team’s December 16th match-up against the Brevard Tornados was canceled due to inclement weather. It will take more than time off and some chilly weather to slow cool off the Winston-Salem State Rams, who are off to their best start to the season since 1999, the last Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship team, when the team opened the season with seven straight wins.

The Rams’ dynamic depth has been the key to the team’s strong start as the 2010-11 squad features four players who are averaging double-digits in scoring with junior guard Lamar Monger leading the way at 14.0 points per game. Redshirt-senior guard Shelton Carter is also off to a great start to the season at 12.8 points per game. One of the keys to the Rams’ strong play has been the stellar play of senior forward Paul Davis who is averaging a double-double 11.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Davis has also been stellar defensively with 18 blocked shots this season.

At the other end of the court, the Rams will face a Flagler team that is also off to a strong start to the season with a 6-1 record. The Saints will take on the Rams while looking to bounce back after their first loss of the season, a 76-66 loss to Nova Southeastern. The Saints will also featured a talented offensive attack that features strength both on the perimeter and on the interior. Senior guard John Pietkiewicz, currently leads the team with a 16.4 ppg scoring average while sophomore center Chad July averages a solid 13.0 points per game. Forward D.J. Ferguson will round out the Saints’ efforts on the interior, averaging 9.7 points per game and 11.1 rebounds per game.

The Rams and Saints are scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off at Warden Arena in Winter Park, Florida. Live stats and audio will be available at RollinsSports.com, the official website of host Rollins College.
