Devilettes start slow, fall 91-65 in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Georgia -- The Mississippi Valley State Devilette basketball team started off slow before falling 91-65 to Georgia State in the first game of the 2010 Georgia State Holiday Invitational Wednesday afternoon.

MVSU (2-8) found themselves down by deficits of 16 and 20 points in the first half as Georgia State shot 61.8 percent from the field in the opening period. The Panthers out rebounded MVSU 24-14 in the period while MVSU shot 36.4 percent and committed 12 first half turnovers.

The second half saw GSU (5-5) push the lead to more than 30 points before the Devilettes began a slight comeback. However, more turnovers and being out played in the paint led to the final deficit.

For MVSU, Lenise Stallings had a game-high 18 points, three assists and two steals. Ka'Neshia Smith had 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and six steals while Alia Frank tallied ten points, five rebounds and two assists. Aspen Clemons and Olivia Kennedy each had six points in the contest.

Kendra Long led GSU with 18 points while four other players finished in double figures.

Mississippi Valley will now face Troy, who lost 61-43 to Hampton, in the tournament consolation contest Thursday at 2 pm.
