Basketball student-athletes take weekly honors

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Junior Kwinnyata Mercer (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and redshirt junior Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) were named Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week Monday, for the period ending Dec. 19.

Mercer, a guard/forward of the women's basketball team scored a game-high 21 points and had four rebounds and steals in a 61-50 loss to Towson on Saturday at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Mercer has came of the bench to score in double figures in all five game she has played this season. The Towson game marked the first time a UMES player scored 20 points off the bench since Latoya Buckner (Washington, D.C.) accomplished the feat against Coppin State on Feb. 20, 2010.

Mercer shot 6-for-11 from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point range in the game.

The Lady Hawks are back in action at Wake Forest on Monday at 7 p.m.

Haley a guard on the men's basketball team recorded 17 points on 7-of-20 from the floor in a 97-64 loss at No. 8 Pittsburgh on Saturday. Haley also added three rebounds and three assists.

The Hawks face Washington College at the Hytche Center at 1 p.m.
