WHITE NAMED BOB COUSY AWARD CANDIDATE MAGGIE HAYON DECEMBER 20, 2010 Senior point guard one of 66 in the nation in contention for award SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore senior guard Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named Monday as a candidate for the 2011 Bob Cousy Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Through 10 games, White is averaging 8.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in 29.1 minutes of play per game. He is best known for his knack to get his teammates the ball and dish out assists as he averages 4.8 per contest this season. In his two-year career for the Hawks, White has a total of 220 assists and broke the UMES single-season record in 2009-10 with 172. He is on pace to break Joel Hoover's three-year career record of 302 by the end of the season. "It is truly outstanding that Kevin is being recognized for this prestigious award," said Hawks head coach Frankie Allen. "Bob Cousy is synonymous with what point guard play is all about. To be a candidate for such a high award is a testament to Kevin and his hard work on and off of the court. I know I can speak for everyone at UMES in saying that we are very proud of Kevin and honored to have him represent our school." The annual award, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes college basketball's top point guard. A total of 66 players have been nominated for the 2011 award. "The Hall of Fame is proud to once again work with Mr. Cousy and to present one of college basketball's most coveted awards," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "This list represents a wide range of college basketball's top players and we look forward to honoring the legacy of Mr. Cousy with this year's award winner." The original list of candidates will be narrowed down to a final 20 by January 3rd, final 10 by February 3rd, and final five by March 3rd. A Hall of Fame appointed screening committee will be narrowing down the candidates from 20 to 10 to 5 prior to a Blue Ribbon Selection Committee evaluating the final five candidates and ultimately choosing the winner. Both of the Hall of Fame committees are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2011 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame's Class Announcement on Monday April 4th in Houston as part of NCAA Final Four weekend. Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award have included: Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph's), Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A&M), DJ Augustin (Texas), Ty Lawson (North Carolina) and Greivis Vasquez (Maryland).
