Lady Rams’ Rally Falls Short in 63-53 Loss at Georgia College & State

Medley ties career-high 22 points in tough loss

MILLEDGEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-4) came up short on the road, taking a 63-53 road loss to the Georgia College Bobcats (6-1) Thursday evening. The Lady Rams gave it their all and battled throughout the ballgame, but fell short in the end. Junior guard Courtney Medley continued her great start to the season with 22 points and four rebounds in the game to lead the Lady Rams in the tough loss.

The Lady Rams gave a solid overall effort in the game, shooting 35% from the floor. However, the Lady Rams were outrebounded, 41-29 in the loss. The team did manage a solid defensive effort, forcing 16 Bobcat turnovers in the game. Sophomore guard Jasmine Newkirk also gave a solid effort with 11 points and four rebounds as well.

Things looked good early for the Lady Rams as the team opened the game with an early 7-2 run. But the Bobcats answered the Lady Rams run and tied the game, 7-7, at the 16:25 mark. The Lady Rams and Bobcats continued a see-saw battle midway through the first half, with neither team leading by more than two points. However, late in the half, the Bobcats were able to take a six-point lead but the Lady Rams were able to cut it to three points, 23-20, with 3:36 left in the half. It was a Newkirk three-pointer that brought the game in reach for the Lady Rams. In the final minutes, the Lady Rams struggled to stop the Bobcats and ended the half with a 29-22 deficit.

The struggles continued early in the second half for the Lady Rams as the team fell victim to a 5-0 Bobcats run and fell into an 11-point deficit, 33-22 with 18:42 left to play. After early timeout, the Lady Rams were able to settle down and mounted a run of their own, cutting the Bobcats’ lead to one point, 33-32 with 16:04 left in the ballgame. Newkirk hit a huge three-pointer at the 14:16 mark, giving the Lady Rams their first lead since early in the first half. Foul troubles would come back to haunt the team, however as with under nine minutes to play, Medley got her fourth foul and was sent to the bench. In her absence, the Bobcats outscored the Lady Rams 8-2 and took a 48-40 lead with 5:57 left in the game. The Bobcats took a 13-point lead, their largest lead of the game, at the 2:55 mark. The Lady Rams continued to battle back cutting the Bobcats lead to six points late, but in the end the Lady Rams would get no closer, and went home with the loss.

The Lady Rams will have a break for the holidays and return to action January 4th when they travel to Lawrenceville, Va. to take on the Lady Tigers of Saint Paul’s in a non-conference road game.
