Texas Southern’s Johnnie Cole Name SWAC Coach of the Year  - Rodney Bush
Birmingham, AL-Third year Texas Southern football head coach Johnnie
Cole has reached a height not seen by another TSU football coach. Cole was
named 2010 SWAC Coach of the Year during the SWAC Championship news
conference in Birmingham, Alabama. “Wow! This is an unbelievable moment,” said Cole. “I
am humbled by this honor and proud to be in the company of SWAC greats like Eddie Robinson, Mareno Casem and others. I have a great group of coaches and players who have bought into the system and although this is an individual award, it represents a team award to me.” When Cole took over the TSU football program, the team was 0-11. Three years later, the Tigers are 8-3 and hold the 2010 SWAC Western Division title. Cole may be the only Texas Southern football head coach to win this honor. Current records do not reveal
any former TSU football coach winning a SWAC Coach of the Year honor.
The Tigers have another opportunity to make history on Saturday when they face Alabama State in the 2010 SWAC Championship game. No Texas Southern team
has won an outright SWAC Championship title.
