Southern’s Fulghum Named SWAC Defensive Player of the YearBirmingham, AL-Texas Southern’s Dejuan Fulghum captured on the top prizes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Killeen, Texas native was voted 2010 SWAC Defensive Player of the Year. “This honor represents the hard work of the entire TSU defense,” said Fulghum. “I am grateful for the award and I hope that this shows that our defense is starting to get the respect we’ve worked hard for over the years.” Fulghum, a senior linebacker led Texas Southern with91 tackles and 9 sacks. He was ranked 3rd in the SWAC for tackles, 1st in the SWAC in sacks and 6th in the SWAC for Tackles for Loss with 15. Other honors include two-time SWAC Defensive Player of the Week (Oct 9 & Nov. 6), Preseason All-SWAC 2nd team and FCS Senior Scout Bowl All-American honorable mention. Fulghum was also named to the All-SWAC first team. He was joined by 10 other TSU Tigers who earned All-SWAC honors. Offensive lineman Charles Smith, running back Marcus Wright, defensive lineman Johathan Hollins, defensive end Marquis Jackson, defensive back Zack Gallow and defensive back Curtis Thomas were all named All-SWAC first team. Offensive lineman Skylar Trimble, tight end Kirk Fitzhugh, linebacker Shomari Clemons and kick return specialist William Osborne were named to the All-SWAC second team.
