(WEST CHESTER, Pa. – December 11, 2010) Millersville used an 8-0 over the final 3:56 and defeated Bowie State 64-55 in the opening game of the Carol Eckman Memorial Tournament. Millersville’s Mashira Newman scored a team-high 16 points, all in the second half, to pace the Marauders. Senior Lakisha Walker led Bowie State with 18 points.

Bowie State opened up 19-9 advantage and extended their lead to 34-22 by halftime. BSU’s Lady Bulldogs hit 13-of-28 (43 percent) first half field goals and were paced by senior Lakisha Walker with 14 first period points.

Millersville committed 16 first half turnovers, resulting in 17 Bowie State points and 20 of Bowie State’s first half point were in the paint.

Domonique Stroman began the second half with back-to-back field goals for Millersville before Bowie State sophomore Cortney Baynard stopped the brief run with a 3-pointer.

Millersville (5-1) pulled to within two (47-45) with 10:43 left to play following a triple by Sophia Waters and duplicated that with 4:27 remaining to take a 55-53 lead. Bowie State’s Walker scored a bucket in the paint on BSU’s next possession to tie things up at 55-55. Unfortunately, Walker’s layup would be the last of the game for Bowie State.

“We got complacent in the second half and weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be”, said an obviously frustrated BSU head coach Donna Polk. “Our turnovers (26) hurt us and they (Millersville capitalized on our mistakes and we didn’t execute and finish at the time we needed to”.

Bowie State junior Juliette Turner hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds, tying her career-high and added seven points. Senior Brianna Taylor scored nine points on 4-of-6 shooting in the second half.

Other top scorers for Millersville include Newman with 15 (all 3-pointers) and Stroman chipped in 12 points. Miesha Cousins led the Marauders with a team-high nine rebounds and Arielle Mosley pulled down eight in the win.

The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs (2-2) will close out the weekend with a Sunday (12/12) matchup against host West Chester University at 3 pm.
