BIBBS TO BE HONORED BY THE SWAC
Bibbs adds to her collection of honors
Brian Holloway
GREENSBORO, December 9, 2010 – A busy schedule will keep North Carolina A&T head women’s
basketball coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs from being present to receive her latest honor. The
Southwestern Athletic Conference Alumni Association will honor Bibbs with a Lifetime
Achievement Award on Friday, Dec. 10 at the Doubletree Hotel in Birmingham, Ala.
Bibbs will not be attendance because the Aggies will be en route to Huntington, Wva., to face the
Marshall Thundering Herd on Saturday, Dec. 11. NFL Super Bowl MVP quarterback and former Grambling star Doug Williams will accept the honor on Bibbs’ behalf. Williams will be the featured
guest at the 7 p.m., event as the SWAC will roast the historic quarterback.
Three others will be honored along with Bibbs, including former Mississippi Valley State head
coach Archie “Gunslinger” Cooley (coached legendary NFL wide receiver Jerry Rice in college),
former Jackson State head coach James Carson (posthumously) and current Alabama A&M
defensive coordinator Brawnski Towns.
In her 26th year as a head coach, Bibbs continues to excel in her profession. Bibbs has compiled
more than 470 wins in a career that has included stints at Grambling State (13 seasons),
Hampton (7 seasons) and N.C. A&T (6 seasons). Included in her win tally are 10 conference
tournament championships, 13 regular-season championships and 13 20-win seasons. She has
also won her conference’s coach of the year award 10 times.
"I've always had dreams and goals, and I never let anyone deter me from the things I wanted to
accomplish,’’ said Bibbs. “It's the same message I try to pass along to the young ladies in my
program."
Bibbs has transformed the N.C. A&T women’s program into the envy of the conference. In the
process, she has made some historic accomplishments. In 2009, the Aggies received the highest
seed of any HBCU basketball team (men or women) in the history of the NCAA Tournament
when the Aggies garnered a No. 14 seed. A year later, the Aggies had the best postseason run of
any HBCU women’s program in NCAA history when they won two games in the WNIT.
The Aggies are the three-time defending MEAC regular-season champions. They have also been
to the postseason three straight seasons, including two WNIT appearances and one NCAA
appearance. The program has broken the school record for wins twice, and the Aggies own the
MEAC record for wins with their 26-win season during the 2008-09 season. Four players have
reached the 1,000-point plateau under Bibbs, and current senior Jaleesa Sams is less than 100
points away from accomplishing the feat.
