Shaw Builds Early Lead, Holds Off Coker 76-63

(Wingate, NC)- A hot hand and an early scoring run led Shaw over Coker 76-63 to take third place in the Ortho Carolina Classic hosted by Wingate.
On the game, the Bears hit over 58 percent of their shots, including a torrid 70.6 percent in the second half. A strong Coker defense in the second held the Bears to only 17 shots – but Shaw sunk 12 of those to hold onto their lead.
The two teams traded small leads early in the first half. With 9:54 left in the first, Coker’s Austin Harper hit a jumper in the lane that cut the Shaw lead to three, 14-11.
Over the next six minutes, the Bears went on a 18-2 scoring run capped by Greg Thomas’ fast break layup that gave the Bears the 32-13 lead with only 3:56 left in the opening period. The Bears would build their lead to 24, 40-16, by the half.
In the second, the Bears continued to build their lead and Tony Smith’s jumper in the lane midway through the half gave the Bears a 63-34 lead.
The Cobras cut that lead to 16 over the next six minutes, and while they got as close as 12 in the waning minutes of the game, never posed a serious threat to the Bears.
Raheem Smith again led the Bears in scoring – this time with 22 points. Thomas had ten for Shaw. Tony Smith paced the team with eight rebounds and five assists. Raheem Smith had five assists as well.
For the Cobras, Harper had 16 while Delonte Doles had 13 and Tom Wright had 12. Doles had five assists to lead Coker.The Bears next take to the court December 1 when they visit Lenoir-Rhyne for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
