Grant dials long distance to snare GCAC player award

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Jasmine Grant was selected Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball for Nov. 15-21.
     Grant, a 5-foot-8 junior guard from Shreveport, La., and a graduate of Southwood High School, averaged 18.5 points in two XU home victories and made 11-of-17 3-pointers. She scored a career-best 23 points and tied an XU record by making seven 3-pointers in an 86-33 victory Friday against Paul Quinn. The next day Grant scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, in an 82-43 victory against Philander Smith.
     Grant leads the Gold Nuggets this season with 12.5 points per game and is shooting 51 percent from the floor and 48 percent from 3-point range.
     Xavier, ranked 22nd in NAIA Division I, will play No. 15 Langston at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Xavier Classic at The Barn. The opening game will match Dillard and Grambling at 5 p.m. Friday's schedule will include two girls high school games — Lusher vs. Terrebonne at 11 a.m., Helen Cox vs. Warren Easton at noon — followed by Dillard vs. Langston at 1 p.m. and Xavier vs. Grambling at 3.
