Lady Rams to Host West Virginia State in 4:00 p.m. Home Opener

WSSU off to best start since 2005

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-1) will open home court this weekend when the team hosts the West Virginia State Yellowjackets (2-3, WVIAC) in a 4:00 p.m. After opening the season with a pair of wins, the Lady Rams will look to bounce back following a hard-fought 62-54 loss at Cornell, Monday evening.

Saturday’s game will give fans their first chance to see the Lady Rams team that is off to its best start since 2005. It has been the team’s tough defensive effort that has led the team to its strong start as the team is holding its opponents to shooting 34.6% from the field and scoring just 53.0 points per game. The Lady Rams have also benefitted from a strong cast of newcomers as junior guard Courtney Medley is currently leading the team, averaging 17.3 points per game while sophomore guard Jasmine Newkirk is averaging 13.7 points per game.

The game won’t be the Yellowjackets’ first meeting with a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) team as the Yellowjackets faced both Shaw and Virginia Union in the WVIAC/CIAA Challenge. The Yellowjackets took a 71-59 loss to Shaw, but defeated the Virginia Union Lady Panthers 79-62.  The Yellowjackets also took a 63-58 win over the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots. Senior guard Melissa Ford will lead the Yellowjackets’ attack in Saturday’s game.
