(BOWIE, Md. – November 23, 2010) The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs shook off the cobwebs and persevered down the stretch to defeat Glenville State College 64-57 in BSU’s season opener. Junior Chanita Jordan came off the bench to lead the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points and senior Lakisha Walker along with junior Juliette Turner combined for 21 points in the victory.

Neither team shot very well from the field or the free throw line the entire evening. The visiting Lady Pioneers hit 21-of-61 from the field (34 percent), which included 7-of-33 behind the arc and made just 8-of-18 (44 percent) from the charity stripe.

Bowie State faired only slightly better overall, knocking down 25-of-67 from the field (37 percent) and converted a disappointing 11-of-24 (46 percent) from the free throw line. BSU managed to make only 3-of-14 three-point field goals with senior Brittany Jackson contributing two of those.

The first 20 minutes was a half of spurts. Bowie State began the game with a 7-0 burst in the first three minutes of the contest. However, Glenville State answered with a 14-0 run over the next eight minutes. Senior Brittany Gowdy stopped the run with a layup at the 9:38 mark, but the Lady Pioneers led by five (14-9).

Bowie State was able to pull within two twice in the closing minutes of the first half, but went into halftime with 29-26 deficit.

Glenville State opened the second half with an 11-4 run to take its largest lead of the game at 40-30, three minutes into period two. Bowie State responded with a 16-5 run to take its first lead since midway through the first half, capped off by a short jumper by sophomore Cortney Baynard, creating a 46-45 Lady Bulldogs lead.

The combination of Tenisha Wilson and Danielle Woodmore shifted the advantage back to Glenville State for a very brief period before Bowie State took the lead for good with 5:04 remaining in the game on a 3-pointer by Jackson.

Wilson led Glenville State (3-3) with a game-high 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting and a team-high eight rebounds. Autumn Davis added 14 points and Woodmore handed out a team-high seven assists.

Turnovers were plentiful as the Lady Pioneers and Lady Bulldogs combined for 61. Glenville State accounted for 19 turnovers in the first half alone and Bowie State committed 21 in the opening period.

Aside from Walker’s 13 points, she added eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Turner just missed a double-double, recording eight points and 13 rebounds.

Bowie State will take a little time off for Thanksgiving before returning to action – Saturday (December 4th), hosting the Lady Deacons of Bloomfield College at 4 pm.
