FSU’S MEEKS, NWOKOLO AMONG THE BEST IN THE CIAA Meeks leads league in aces; Nwokolo in hitting percentage Alex Podlogar FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos have been one of the CIAA’s upper echelon teams for several years, playing in the CIAA Championship in the last three years entering the 2010 season. They are a contender again this year. The numbers say so. Fayetteville State’s Samantha Meeks (Sr., Laurinburg, NC) leads the CIAA in service aces with 0.86 per set while Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (So., Greensboro, NC) is first in hitting percentage at .349, scoring her 111 kills at a higher clip than any other player in the conference. Their teammate Octavia Wynn (So., Hope Mills, NC) is second in aces (0.84 per set) while Achari Mainor (Sr., Antioch, CA), ranks No. 2 in assists, with 8.15 per set. Meeks is also fourth in kills per set, with her team-high 144 kills coming at a rate of 3.27 per set. Nwokolo is fifth in blocks with 0.71 per set while JaMisha Jordan (Fr., Fayetteville, NC) is seventh in digs with 2.34 per set. With All-CIAA selections Mainor and Meeks leading the team, not to mention Nwokolo, it’s no surprise that Fayetteville State ranks first in the CIAA team standings in kills (11.38 per set) and assists (9.34 per set). Fayetteville State, which also tops the conference in aces with 3.47 per set, is also second in the league in hitting percentage (.219) and opponents hitting percentage (.078). At 6-1, the Lady Broncos (11-4, 11-3) remain half a game back of St. Augustine’s (14-6 , 11-2, 6-0) in Southern Division play. Fayetteville State will try to even the regular season series when it travels to play the Falcons on Monday, Oct. 18. Alex Podlogar Assistant Sports Information Director |
