Seven newcomers join Gold Rush for the 2010-11 season

NEW ORLEANS — Seven new recruits will join the Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball program in 2010-11, eighth-year Coach Dannton Jackson announced Friday.

Signed with the Gold Rush are:

Ty Allen, a 6-foot-1 guard from Matteson, Ill., and Rich South High School.
Anthony Boswell, a 6-2 guard from Slidell, La., and St. Stanislaus College of Bay St. Louis, Miss.
Jordan Hulsey, a 6-8 forward from Memphis, Tenn., and Germantown High School.
Chris Iles, a 5-11 guard from Houston and Alief Hastings High School. Iles is a transfer from NCAA

Division I member Nicholls State.

Quntavius Johnson, a 6-foot guard from Springfield, Tenn., and Christian Community School.
Jeremy Lee, a 6-6 forward from Chicago, Global Visions Academy and Kennedy-King College.
Anthony Simmons, a 6-8 forward from Rochester, N.Y., and Allendale Columbia School. Simmons is a
transfer from NCAA Division II Gannon University.

Allen, Boswell, Hulsey and Johnson will be freshmen on the XU roster. Simmons will be a sophomore, and Iles and Lee will be juniors.

Allen was all-conference last season after averaging 11 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals to help Rich South go 25-5 and reach the round of 16 of the Illinois Class 3A state playoffs. Boswell averaged 9.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and a team-leading 3.9 assists last season for St. Stanislaus and scored in double figures 14 times. He helped the Rock-A-Chaws finish second in the Mississippi Class 4A state playoffs.

Hulsey averaged 11.4 points as a senior for Germantown and scored 19 points Feb. 12 to help the Red Devils end Ridgeway's 21-game win streak. Iles averaged 8.5 points and a team-leading 3.6 assists and made 43 3-pointers for Nicholls State in 2009-10. As a freshman Iles averaged 3.5 points and 1.9 assists for Nicholls State's first 20-game winner in 14 seasons.

Johnson averaged 20.1 points last season and produced four 30-point games as an all-conference player for Christian Community's Colts. He was all-county for Springfield High School as a sophomore and junior. Lee averaged 6.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in two junior-college seasons, including eight points and 5.5 rebounds for Kennedy-King last season.

Simmons averaged 3.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in his only season at Gannon and had game highs of 14 points and eight rebounds. He averaged 24.2 points and 13 rebounds as a senior at Allendale Columbia and was second-team Class C All-State and a McDonald's All-America nominee.

Simmons also averaged 14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in one season at Suffield (Conn.) Academy prep school.

Xavier, a member of the NAIA and the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, was 18-13 last season. The Gold Rush ranked second in NAIA Division I in field-goal percentage defense and sixth in scoring defense. Xavier's 25 seasons of 20 or more victories are the most in the history of Louisiana men's college basketball.
