Former Lady Trojan two-year starter, Leslie Phillips (Riverdale, GA) was awarded an NCAA Division II Degree-Completion Grant. Leslie Phillips will graduate from Virginia State University in December 2010. Phillips was also a two year member of the Lady Trojans basketball team that recorded back-to-back 20 win seasons. This awards program is given to only three student-athletes throughout the entire Division II, providing financial assistance for completion of a first baccalaureate degree to deserving student-athletes.

After transferring from Georgia Perimeter College in the summer of 2008 to Virginia State University, Leslie Phillips became a starter in her first season as a Lady Trojan averaging 9.5 points a game and then averaged 8 points a game last season. Phillips was a team captain and floor general as she helped guide the Lady Trojans to a 22-7 record, the CIAA Eastern Division crown in 2010, and assisted VSU in making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2002.

Leslie Phillips has future aspirations of entering the restaurant industry after graduating from Virginia State. She has dreams of opening a sports bar and grill with her knowledge and background in business management. Phillips was one of three student-athletes to be awarded with this grant for the upcoming school semester. "I am very surprised and ecstatic to be given the opportunity to continue my pursuit of a degree here at Virginia State University.

Being one of the three student-athletes award winners is a great honor and opportunity for me," Phillips said.
