HAMPTON, NORFOLK STATE WIN 2010 MEAC OUTDOOR TRACK TITLES Sahar Abdur-Rashid 05/08/10 GREENSBORO, NC- May 8, 2010 –The Hampton Lady Pirates and Norfolk State Spartans won the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University. The Hampton Lady Pirates tallied 168.50 points to win their fifth consecutive title. Norfolk State finished in second with 149.66 while South Carolina State was third with 108 points. Petrice Richards of Hampton set a MEAC record in the 100m dash with a time of 11.40. Florida A&M’s Shaunta Pelham held the previous record of 11.45 that was set in 2000. Hampton’s Jahlisa Smith also posted a meet record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:15.28, breaking former Lady Pirate Krystle Medlin’s mark of 11:29.75 in 2009. South Carolina State’s Shamire Rothmiller tallied 22 points to earn Outstanding Field Athlete. Hampton’s Racquel Vassell posted 24.50 points to earn the Outstanding Runner honor. Hampton’s Maurice Pierce was selected as the Outstanding Coach. “During the MEAC Indoor Track and Championships we made a couple of mistakes that really hurt us,” said Pierce. “Coming into the outdoor season we put together a plan and knew that we would have to outscore Norfolk State in the sprinting events. This championship means a whole lot because we were not coming off a championship during the indoor season.” In men’s action, The Spartans tallied 150.50 points en route to their fifth consecutive men’s MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Maryland Eastern Shore finished second with 112 points and North Carolina A&T followed in third with 91 points. North Carolina A&T’s Robert Boulware posted 17 points in the field events and was named Outstanding Field Athlete. Norfolk State’s Amos Kipseogi tallied 26 points on the track to earn Outstanding Runner. Norfolk State Kenneth Giles was named the Outstanding Coach. “Our athletes performed the way we expected them to perform,” explained Giles. “Our guys prepared hard and worked through injuries. We are bringing another championship back to Norfolk State.” The Hampton 4x100m relay team of Aaron Anderson, Predist Walker, Devon Brown and Reggie Dixon set a MEAC record with a time of 39.71.
