Hall makes senior day memorable in shutout victory

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (8-25) had a breakout effort in an 11-0 shutout win over the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs (8-38), Sunday. The Lady Rams made the most of their opponents’ struggles on the mound to take control of the game early and never looked back en route to the victory.

Though it was senior day, it was freshman infielder Artreya Jernigan who led the Lady Rams to the win with a career-best two hits in three at-bats with two runs scored and a pair of RBI in the game. She was one of seven Lady Rams to record a hit in the game. Senior shortstop Whitney Hall made the best of her final home game as a Lady Ram, accounting for four (4) runs in the game. She recorded a run scored with a three-RBI double in the third inning.

The Lady Rams took control of the game early with eight first inning runs. The first eight WSSU players to bat all reach base and scored in the inning. Junior outfielder Candace Spinks highlighted the inning when she hit a two-RBI single. The team added three third-inning runs when Hall hit a bases-clearing three-RBI double that sealed the 11-0 victory for the team.

Freshman pitcher Brittany Lane (6-16) picked up the pitching victory, going five innings and allowing just one hit with three strikeouts and one walk in the game.

The Lady Rams will close out the 2010 season on the road next weekend when the team heads to Norfolk, Va. to face the Norfolk State Lady Spartans in a weekend series.
