PRINCESS ANNE, Md.-The Hawks' men's tennis team added a late season match with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Coppin State and then added a win to their 2010 total. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) topped Coppin State 5-2 to finish out their season with a win. The win is the third for the Hawks (3-11) and the third for interim head coach Harold Fowler, who earned all three of the Hawks wins after taking over the program at the end of March. UMES dominated the Eagles for the second time this season. They won two out of three against Coppin State, both coming on the friendly confines of the Hawks' Outdoor Tennis Complex. No. 1 player Emmash Sudusinghe earned the win in singles with a 6-4, 6-3 topping of Viktor Lemberger, avenging a loss to Lemberger in a tiebreak almost a month ago. Winning was contagious for the Hawks as No. 2 player Dorian Thomas defeated Quincy Darko 6-2, 6-4 and No. 3 singles Osvaldo Rivera topped James Jeffreys 6-4, 6-4 for his third singles win in a row. The Hawks dropped the fourth and fifth singles matches in tough fought contests as Richard Warren fell at fourth singles 3-6, 4-6 and Marquette Robinson fell at fifth singles 4-6, 4-6. Jon Toms got a win by default at sixth singles to account for four UMES singles points. In doubles action the Hawks earned the point. They got an easy one at third doubles by default, but earned the win at No. 2 doubles as Sudusinghe and Warren defeated Lemberger and Darko 8-6. They almost won at No. 1 singles as well. Thomas and Rivera tied Jeffreys and Jahara Wigfall eight all, but fell in a tiebreaker 10-8. "It was a good way to end the season," said Fowler. "We didn't expect to play another match, but we were glad to help out a conference school and play one more time. We were also excited about the win and what it gives us to build on for next season."
