HAWKS AND LADY HAWKS BOTH PLACE THIRD AT MORGAN LEGACY MAGGIE HAYON 04/18/10 Distance runners collect majority of points BALTIMORE, Md. - Freshman Basil Melek (Grand Prairie, Texas) and sophomore Vanessa Henry (Captial Heights, Md.) led the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's outdoor track and field teams to third place finishes at the Morgan State Legacy this weekend. The men's team scored a total of 95 points, which was 40 points shy of Pittsburgh's 135 point first place finish. Pittsburgh also took the women's title, scoring 246 points. The Lady Hawks scored 83.50 on the weekend. Eleven members of the men's squad scored points in the Hawks' effort and were led by Melek's 16 points. Melek placed first in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:12.75 and third in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:17.76. With their finishes in the 3000-meter steeplechase and 5000-meter run, junior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) and senior Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya) ended the weekend with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Kiprotich placed second overall in the 5000m with a time of 16:17.65 and third in the steeplechase in 11:26.22. Sang ran the 5000m in 16:39.91, which was good for fourth place, and the steeplechase in 11:26.05, which was good for second. The 4x100 relay team secured first place with their time of 40.95, which scored 10 points for UMES. Members of the squad were junior Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.), senior Allodin Fothergill (New Hempstead, N.Y.), sophomore Damian Miles (Teaneck, N.J.) and sophomore Akheem Gauntlett (Roselle, N.J.). Gauntlett and Keane-Dawes scored eight points apiece with their second place finishes in their respective events. Gauntlett ran a 21:03 in the 200-meter dash while Keane-Dawes finished the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.15. Fothergill finished the 200-meter dash in 21:08, which was good for third place behind Gauntlett. Freshman Jonathan Bridle (Baltimore, Md.) added in eight points of his own with his school-record-breaking throw of 52.28 meters in the javelin Friday. Henry scored 13 points to lead the Lady Hawks. She finished second in the Shot Put with a distance of 12.40 meters and fourth in the Discus with a distance of 39.08 meters. The 4x400 relay finished first to tally 10 points in a time of 3:55.80. Sophomores Monique Hawkins (Randallstown, Md.) and Melina Gallas (Paris, France), junior Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) and sophomore Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) ran in the relay for UMES. Anais also contributed 10 points of her own with her 800-meter first place finish time of 2:10.35. Jones also scored 10 points for the Lady Hawks in the 1500-meter run. Her time of 4:42.95 was good for first place. Senior Tamica Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamaica) finished second in the 1500-meter run with her time of 4:55.55, which was good for eight points. UMES next travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete at the Penn Relays Thursday, April 22 to Saturday, April 24.
