Gold Rush defeats Prairie View, ends losing streak Ed Cassiere 04/14/10 ALEXANDRIA, La. -- The Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis team defeated NCAA Division I opponent Prairie View A&M 5-2 Wednesday to snap a season-worst six-match losing streak. Mikhail Vaval clinched the victory -- the first for the Gold Rush since March 20 -- with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 decision against Christopher Jordan at No. 4 singles.Xavier won the doubles point, and Steffen-Giles Osborn, Hassan Abbas and Sean Richardson also recorded singles victories. Richardson played the longest match of the dual, a 6-7 (8-6), 6-3, 7-5 decision over Kristen Powell at No. 5.Prairie View picked up one point by default at No. 6 singles -- Xavier had just five available players for the sixth consecutive dual -- and scored the other point when Jose Garcia defeated Mario Myles 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3. The Gold Rush, ranked 16th in the NAIA, is 10-12. Both its non-conference victories are against NCAA D-I opponents. The victory was Xavier's first on the road since Feb. 21.Xavier's next match will be its regular-season finale at noon Saturday at the University of New Orleans. The Gold Rush will be the top seed for the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on April 30-May 1 at the UNO Tennis Center. |
