UMES FALLS TO NORFOLK STATE ON WALK-OFF SINGLE, 5-4 TYLER BIRNBAUM 04/11/10 Vaughn scores twice and steals two bases in loss NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State's Blaze Zeilman had a pinch-hit, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 5-4, at Marty L. Miller Field Sunday. Zeilman's game-winning RBI base hit to right-center field scored Chris Joyce from third to give the Spartans (11-12-1, 4-5 MEAC) the series sweep of UMES (2-28, 1-7). Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) came on to shut down NSU and send the game into extra innings but couldn't. Zimmerman (0-3) faced five batters, four of which, reached base, on the way to the loss. Chris Joyce drew a walk to start the frame and John Lynch laid down a perfect bunt for a single before Cameron Parsons sacrificed the runs to second and third. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Zeilman came through with the game winner. Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) led the Hawks at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases while Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.) chipped in with a two- run single in the Haws' three-run third inning that gave the visitors a 4-3 lead. NSU, which outhit UMES, 10-6, got two hits apiece from Lynch, Ryan Wiggins and TiQuan Griffin. Chase Davenport (3-2) picked up the complete-game win, surrendering four earned runs. He struck out eight and walked three in 124 pitches. UMES starter Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) earned a tough no decision in eight innings and 140 pitches. He gave up eight hits and three eared runs while walking five and fanning three. Norfolk tied the game at 4-all in the bottom of the fifth inning when Joyce scored on a Parsons groundout with two outs. Joyce single to start the inning and moved to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. UMES took a 4-3 advantage in the top of the third. Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.), who had two hits in three at-bats on the day, started the inning with an infield single. Vaughn then singled to center, advancing to second on a Griffin fielding error, setting up a second and third situation. After a flyout Tre-von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) singled to shortstop to cut the NSU lead to 3-2. Johnson and Vaughn stole second a third on the next play and with two outs Haines delivered a two-out single to left for the lead. The Hawks picked up a run in the top of the first as Vaughn drew a walk to open the inning, stole second and scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs. Norfolk State responded with a pair of runs in their half of the inning. John Rasberry walked and scored on a Lynch RBI single and Brandon Hairston reached on an error by Gonzalez, scoring on a Parsons sacrifice fly to right field. The Spartans added a run in the third on back-to-back doubles by Ryan Wiggins and Griffin with one out. Griffin's two-bagger to right scored Wiggins. UMES returns home to host Navy Wednesday at Hawks Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. |
