Shaw Stretches Unbeaten Streak to Seven; Downs Chowan 7-2 Sherri Fillingham 04/09/10 (Raleigh, NC) – With the Western Division CIAA title and a regional ranking already in hand, the Shaw women’s tennis team played their last home match of the season to celebrate their seniors, and came away with a decisive 7-2 victory over Chowan. The only losses were defaults due to the absence of a Shaw player, leading to a loss at the third doubles and sixth singles slot. Shaw stands at 19-4 on the season, 16-0 in the CIAA. With the loss, Chowan drops to 8-11 and 7-7 in the CIAA. Senior Livia Oliveira did not drop a single game in her two-set sweep of Melinda Williams, 6-0, 6-0, while her fellow seniors Fernanda Silva and Xania Steele dropped only one game each. Silva defeated Tara Lunney 6-1, 6-0 while Steele defeated Brittany Allen 6-0, 6-1. In the number one singles slot, the region’s 11th ranked Lolia Kienka ran her singles unbeaten streak to 14 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Kashae Beverly. Evan Okafor handed Brittany Moser a 6-1, 6-0 loss. Silva and Oliveira combined at number one doubles for an 8-0 win over Moser and Lunney, while Kienka and Okafor defeated Audreka Bumbrey and Beverly 8-1. The Lady Bears travel to Virginia State Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. match that will determine the best record in the CIAA. VSU’s only conference loss was to Shaw 7-2 in March. The Lady Bears will begin play in the CIAA Tournament on Thursday, April 15. |
