Rams Men’s Tennis Falls To The Citadel 7-0 At WSSU Tennis Complex

Bulldogs sweep all nine matches in straight sets; WSSU drops to 2-18 overall

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Battling the unseasonably hot temperatures of early April the Winston-Salem State University men’s tennis team turned in a valiant effort but fell in defeat 7-0 to the Bulldogs of the Citadel on Tuesday afternoon at the WSSU Tennis Complex.

The Bulldogs swept all nine matches in straight sets despite stellar play from the Rams, particularly in doubles play.

The Citadel earned an 8-3 victory at first doubles as the pairing of Yufo Sutantio and Alberto Diaz defeated WSSU’s Brian Coxton and Ian Hunter; secured an 8-2 victory at second doubles as David Orces and Derek Dickey defeated Antentor Hinton and Joab Odera 8-2 and saw Josh Cook and Luis Morett defeat Troy Moore and Mason King 8-0 at third doubles.

Despite the loss in all three matches, the Rams played excellent tennis as Coxton and Hunter and Hinton and Odera competed evenly with the nationally-renowned Bulldogs.

The heat and intensity of the doubles matches affected the Rams in the singles matches as The Citadel earned straight set victories in all six matches en route to the 7-0 sweep.

WSSU falls to 2-18 overall with the loss while The Citadel improves to 7-12 overall with the victory.

The Rams return to action on Sunday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. as they play host to Queens (N.C.) College at the WSSU Tennis Complex.
