Abbas is GCAC Player of the Week for second time this year Ed Cassiere 04/04/10 NEW ORLEANS -- Hassan Abbas, who closed Xavier University of Louisiana's trip to California with consecutive victories against NAIA top-20 singles players, is the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for March 29-April 4. Abbas a junior from Saltaire, England, and a graduate of Bingley Grammar School and Ventura (Calif.) College defeated No. 18 Lucas Pereira of Vanguard 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday and No. 9 Augusto Elias of Concordia (Calif.) 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday. Abbas is 19-6 in singles this season and leads the Gold Rush in victories and winning percentage. Abbas played doubles with Sean Richardson as a partner for the first time and recorded victories on consecutive days. The first victory came against Aaron Frantz and Jose Hilla of top-ranked and defending NAIA champion Fresno Pacific.It's the second time this year that Abbas won the GCAC award. He also did it for Feb. 1-7.
