Rams, Lady Rams Run Strong on First Day of Aggie Relays Trevin Q. Goodwin 04/02/10 Williams posts two top five performances; Peaks second in high jump GREENSBORO, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams and Lady Rams track & field had some great efforts on Good Friday at the Aggie Relays. The WSSU senior tandem of Paul Williams and Jessica Peaks turned the event into a personal showcase with some great performances at the meet. Williams set the tone for the day with a pair of top five performances. He got things going early, placing third in the men’s 100m dash. He recorded a fourth place finish in the event with a 10.83 to qualify for Saturday’s finals. He also had a great effort in the men’s long jump with a fifth place finish. He recorded a 23’03” (7.10m) in the event. Fellow senior Davril Massey was close behind in the event with a 21’8.25” (6.61m) jump. The Rams weren’t done as the team’s 1600m relay team had a great day, placing second with a 3:21.49 in the event. Only host North Carolina A&T posted a better time than the Rams. The Lady Rams also had some great efforts with both the team’s newcomers and experienced performers showing up for the event. Sophomore sprinter Chinaka Bell got things started placing 10th in the women’s 100m dash preliminaries with a 12.51. Junior Allegra Seegars was also strong in the event, placing 13th with a 12.64. Both sprinters qualified for the women’s 100m dash finals tomorrow. Sophomore hurdler Melody Simpkins-McGee placed eighth in the women’s 100m hurdles preliminaries with a 15.44. She and redshirt-freshman Stephanie Brown, who also placed 10th with a 15.62, qualified for the women’s 100m hurdles finals. Peaks placed second in the women’s high jump with a 5’1” (1.55m). The Lady Rams relay teams were also great with the Lady Rams winning the distance medley with a 13:36.65. The team also had a great effort in the 1600m spring medley with a 4:04.21. Both the Rams and Lady Rams will return to action tomorrow to close out the event. |
