MAGETT LEADS HAMPTON OVER UMES IN DOUBLEHEADER MAGGIE HAYON 04/02/10 Lady Hawks fall in first conference games of season HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton University sophomore Rebecca Magett had a career afternoon as she led her team to two victories, 9-1 and 10-9, over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team Friday at Lady Pirates Field. Magett hit her first career home run to lead off the second game and followed it up by three bombs later in the game. The fours home runs are a Hampton school record. She went a combined 6-for-8 on the day with seven RBIs and a double. The Lady Hawks got off to a rough start in the first game, giving up six runs on four hits in the first inning. The middle three innings seemed to be lifeless for both sides as UMES received singles by freshman Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) in the second and sophomore Britney McLeod (Palmyra, N.J.) in the third and Tamara Vickers hit a single in the fourth for the Lady Pirates. The Lady Hawks got on the board in the fifth inning, beginning with a single by sophomore Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.). Scott advanced to second on an error by right fielder Adrianna Scott. A sacrifice by junior Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) moved Scott to third, who then scored on a throwing error by catcher Brooke Boykin. Sophomore Kristi Miranda (Houston, Texas) singled up the middle before two strikeouts ended the inning, with Hampton ahead, 6-1. The Lady Pirates went on to score three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, to end the game by a score of 9-1. Junior Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) received her third loss of the season, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits, with four walks and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. With the loss, UMES moves to 1-13 on the season and 0-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. Senior Jada Jeffries earned the win for Hampton, her seventh of the season, giving up one run (none earned) on four hits and striking out six in 5.0 innings. The Lady Pirates improve to 12-21 and 1-0. Hampton started to crumble in the second game of the afternoon, giving up three runs on four errors and just one hit in the first inning. Junior Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) was the first Lady Hawk to reach base, on a fielding error by second baseman Tracy Lee. Hahn then singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by Magett, who was the shortstop. James walked to load the bases for senior Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md.). Johnson reached base on another fielding error by Magett while Logan and Hahn both scored. Johnson then advanced to second on a throwing error by Boykin while James crossed the plate. Going into the third inning, the game was tied at 3-3 before the Lady Pirates continued to unravel. Logan and James were both plunked by pitcher Travonna Byrd before Johnson doubled to right field. Both base runners scored on the play to give Johnson two RBIs. Johnson advanced to third on a sacrifice by Miranda. The bases were loaded for freshman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) as Scott walked and Whitehurst was hit by a pitch. Crowder singled and advanced to second on the throw, scoring Johnson and Scott. Whitehurst crossed the plate as Boykin earned her second error of the game. UMES gave up just one run in the bottom of the third, to end the inning up, 8-4. Logan walked to start the fourth inning and moved to second on a sacrifice by Hahn. A sacrifice by James advanced Logan to third, who then scored on single to right field by Johnson. Hampton also scored one run in the fourth inning on Magett's second home run of the game, but the Lady Hawks stayed ahead, 9-5. It looked as though UMES would hold out for the win as they lead, 9-7 going into the bottom of the seventh inning; however, Magett would hit a two run walk-off home run to take home victory for the Lady Pirates by a score of 10-9. Crowder gave up ten runs (nine earned) on 12 hits and one walk while striking out one in 6.1 innings pitched to receive her sixth loss of the season. The Lady Hawks fall to 1-14 (0-2) while Hampton moves to 13-21 and 2-0. Byrd earned the win for the Lady Pirates. Johnson ended the day for UMES going a combined 2-for-6 with a double and five RBIs. The Lady Hawks finish the series at Hampton tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
