MEAC ANNOUNCES TENNIS WEEKLY HONORS Sahar Abdur-Rashid 03/26/10 SCSU’s Bosneag, Kovalevych, Howard’s Morgan, and SCSU’s McDowell Earns Weekly Awards VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – March 26, 2010 – South Carolina State’s Laura Bosneag and Dmytro Kovalevych were chosen as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Athletes of the Week, the conference announced on Friday. Howard’s Brittney Morgan and Norfolk State’s Dexter McDowell received Rookie of the Week accolades. Bosneag (Fr., Romania) won three sets last week to aid the Lady Bulldogs. Against Emory Riddle, the freshman won 6-1, 6-2. She followed that performance with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Marist and five set victory against Fairleigh Dickinson. Kovalevych (Fr., Czech Republic) posted a 5-1 mark last week with victories over Hardin Simmons, Florida Simmons, Farleigh Dickinson, Colgate, and St. John’s last week. Kovalevych won in straight sets in four of the five matches at the number three singles position. Morgan (Fr., Beverly Hills, California) topped Radford’s Ivana Tomaic 6-3, 6-1 at the number one singles spot and defeated Coppin State’s Ana Sebescen 6-2, 6-0. McDowell (Fr., Suffolk, Virginia) earned his third straight singles victory of the season with a win over Maryland Eastern Shore’s Osvaldo Rivera 7-6 (3), 6-4 at the number five singles position. Other Top Performances: Maria Craciun (SCSU) posted a 2-1 mark last week with wins over Emory Riddle and Fairleigh Dickinson and a loss to Marist at the number two position. George Diggs (How) went 2-0 last week with a victory over Richmond’s Dylan Schrode (2-6, 6-2, 10-7) and a walkover against Coppin State. Rebecca Graff (NSU) won at the number six singles spot with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Ben Marks (NSU) won in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 over Maryland Eastern Shore’s Emmash Sudsinghe. Chenge Tsapayi (NSU) posted a victory in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at the number four singles position. Alyssa Works (How) won a non-conference matchup against Radford’s Sara Tegner at the number five singles spot (6-0, 4-6, 6-5) and shutout Coppin State’s Lauretta Mukam 6-0, 6-0 at the number four singles spot. Devard Wharton (How) split two matches last week. He fell in his match against Richmond (2-6, 4-6) and defeated Coppin State’s Fachet at the number one singles position 6-1, 6-3. |
