(Raleigh, NC) – Three Shaw softball players today received CIAA weekly honors. Erica Lafrades was named Offensive Player of the Week, Shanequah Goodson Defensive Player of the Week, and Monica Grimmage was named Player of the Week – the second straight week she has received that award.Erica Lafrades, a freshman from Pittsburg, CA, was named Offensive Player of the Week for hitting .500 in Shaw’s four games. She also scored six runs, and drove in two. She also earned four walks on the week, giving her an on-base percentage of .667. She was also three for four on stolen base attempts. On the season, Lafrades is hitting .310 with a .410 on base percentage.
Shanequah Goodson, a junior from Lithonia, GA, was named Defensive Player of the Week for her work as the Lady Bears catcher. She blocked a number of pitches that could have proven costly, and gunned down four of nine attempted steals. On the week, she allowed only two passed balls. Offensively, she hit .400 in Shaw’s four games. Goodson is hitting .208 on the season, and is tied for the team lead in RBI with 11.Monica Grimmage, a junior from Georgetown, SC, earned her second straight Player of the Week honor after a five for 12 performance over Shaw’s four games, while anchoring the Shaw defense at first base without an error. On the season, she is hitting .400 with a .582 slugging percentage.
Shaw split their four games last week, falling in a doubleheader to Chowan 11-1 and 10-2, but sweeping a doubleheader against Elizabeth City 11-2 and 8-1. On the season, the Lady Bears are 7-19 overall and 7-5 in the CIAA.The Lady Bears return home Tuesday, March 30 to face cross-town rival Saint Augustine’s in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. For those games, Shaw will wear pink jerseys as part of an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer. All Shaw home games are at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex at 1206 Sunnybrook Drive in Raleigh.
