Lady Rams Breakout for 10-1 Win Over North Carolina Central Trevin Q. Goodwin 03/23/10 WSSU knocks out season-high nine hits in five-inning win WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-9) had a break out game with a 10-1 win over the rival North Carolina Central Lady Eagles (4-19), Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Rams had a great game on both sides of the ball with nine hits in the game while allowing just four to the Lady Eagles. The Lady Rams upperclassmen led the way for the team with some great efforts at the plate. Junior catcher Kayla Woodbury led the WSSU batting effort with a four-for-four effort at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI. Senior infielder Whitney Hall added a two-for-three effort at the plate with two doubles and two RBI and a run scored. The Lady Rams took control of the game early when a Hall double through the left side drove in freshman pitcher Brittany Lane to put the Lady Rams ahead 1-0 after the first inning. The team would find itself in a battle when the Lady Eagles turned up their defensive efforts in the second inning and held the Lady Rams scoreless. The team was able to break out for three third-inning runs, however, when Hall hit her second double of the day and drove in Woodbury. Hall would cross the plate in turn on an RBI double by freshman infielder Nikki Lynch that put the Lady Rams in control, 4-0 after three innings. The Lady Eagles would strike back, however, as a third inning solo home run broke up the WSSU shutout. It was in the bottom of the fifth inning that the Lady Rams would close things out, however, as the team broke out for six runs. After an RBI double by freshman infielder Britney Cato, the Lady Rams scored once again on a throwing error by the Lady Eagles. Junior infielder Bonika Terry would also add a sacrifice bunt that allowed junior outfielder Ashley Shepherd to score as well. It was Woodbury who would end the game, however, as she nailed a three-run home run that sealed the 10-1 WSSU victory and game the Lady Rams the mercy-rule win. The home run was the ninth in Woodbury’s career and tied her for the most career home runs by a WSSU player since the 2002 season. Lane (2-4) picked up the pitching win, going all five innings and allowing four hits and one earned run. She finished the game with five strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk. The Lady Rams and Lady Eagles would go on to square off once again to cap the doubleheader later in the day. |
