WSSU manages two hits in tough loss

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-9) found hits hard to come by in an 8-0 loss to the Campbell Camels (9-15-1), Friday evening. The Lady Rams struggled on both sides of the ball in the tough loss as four WSSU fielding errors and just two WSSU hits led to the Lady Rams loss.

WSSU fell victim to a hard-hitting Campbell team that managed 12 hits and took advantage of four WSSU fielding errors in the game. Junior shortstop Bonika Terry and freshman second baseman Tiffany Burgess were the only Lady Rams to record hits in the game.

The Lady Rams’ tough defense kept things close for much of the game as a first-inning Campbell solo home run was the lone score of the game. The Lady Rams were able to keep the score a 1-0 for the first four innings of the game. However, the team allowed a pair of fifth-inning scores to take a 3-0 deficit into the sixth inning. The Lady Rams allowed five sixth-inning runs in the tough loss, including a two-run CU home run to seal the 8-0 loss.

WSSU freshman pitcher Tiffany Burgess (1-4) picked up the pitching loss for the Lady Rams. She threw five innings before fellow freshman Brittany Lane came in for one inning of pitching relief. Burgess allowed eight hits to the Camels with two strikeouts and just two walks. Lane allowed four hits with a strikeout.

The Lady Rams won’t have long to rest when the team hosts the rival North Carolina Central Lady Eagles in a Tuesday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
