LADY TROJANS SWEEP SAINT PAUL'S IN SOFTBALL DOUBLE-HEADER Jim S. Junot 03/17/10 Virginia State University's Geneva Washington pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener, then VSU's Sharron Lipford singled up the middle in the eighth inning to cap a Lady Trojan comeback to complete the sweep with an 8-7 over Saint Paul's College on March 17 at the VSU Softball Field in Ettrick, Va. In the first game, VSU's Dakota Jackson drove in two runs on three hits to give VSU a 5-0 win. Washington struck out 10 and walked none in seven innings of work. In the nightcap, Saint Paul's took a 7-2 lead into the sixth inning, but the Lady Trojans scored three runs in the sixth, then scored twice more in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. In the eighth, Jackson was placed on second due to tie-breaker rules. Takeia Jones recorded an infield hit, followed by popups by Kristen Rountree and Jessica Curtis. Lipford then lined a drive up the middle for the win. Jones picked up the win in the second game, striking out six in eight innings of work. VSU now travels to Alta Vista, Va., to face Southern Virginia University on March 19. |
