Rams, Lady Rams open 2010 outdoor season with impressive performances

CONWAY, SC – It didn’t take long for the Winston-Salem State Rams and Lady Rams track & field teams to show their stuff with some great performances in the first meet of the outdoor season for the teams. Both the Rams and Lady Rams recorded some great results at the meet.

The Rams were impressive in a number of events with some strong performances both on the track and in jump events. Sophomore Andrew Chebii highlighted the effort, winning the men’s 800m run with a 1:53.28 in the event. He was joined in the top ten by fellow sophomore Desmond Wiggan who placed sixth with a 1:57.13. Senior Paul Williams also had a great day as he placed second in the men’s long jump with a 23’7.5” (7.2m) jump. He wasn’t done for the day as he finished third in the men’s 100m dash with a 10.77. Sophomore Aaron Barnes also had a strong day, placing seventh in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a 10:09.17. The Rams’ 4x400m relay team also had a strong day with a 3:24.88 to finish eighth in the event.

It was senior jumper Jessica Peaks who led the way for the Lady Rams. Peaks placed third in the women’s high jump with a 5’5” (1.65m). She tied the first and second place jumpers with the height. The Lady Rams’ 4x100m relay team also had a strong effort with a 6th place finish in the event with a 48.50.

The Rams and Lady Rams will return home for their next action when the team takes part in the 2010 Wake Forest Open.
